This is an absolute MUST for those interested in ships, or even history in general. Admission ($7) is a bargain! The guides are very informative, and walking around the ship is like stepping back into the 1940's. 99% of the furniture is original to her 1940 refit, and her public rooms are in great shape. The ship is in a constant state of restoration, so there's some rust and faded paint to be seen, but that's part of the charm. The tour takes about one and a half to two hours, and visitors get to see most of the ship. The only two rooms that are still blocked off are the Men's and Ladies' Lounges as they are in a state of restoration.Operating hours are limited to 1pm-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays only, and she's only open through Labor Day weekend. Check out their website for all the details. She's an important maritime treasure that I hope will be around for a long time.
I get a chuckle out of the review by katp1 because the Clipper hasn't crossed the lake on its own since the 70's. This is a static display of a majestic ship built before the Titanic that served many people on the Great Lakes. The dock isn't pretty so wear good shoes but once you get aboard, you go back generations and see how people lived on the lakes. If you are lucky, the last captain of the ship might be aboard and he is wonderful to listen to. A group of dedicated volunteers work hard to keep this ship open to the public and their love for the ship is obvious. Even met a guy today who watched the maiden voyage at 9 years old! If you love history on the water, don't miss this. The price is quite reasonable to get aboard and they have a great little ship store if you want to take a t shirt home.
What fun this trip is, especially if you don't get seasick. Packed with so many options for your crossing Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, we crossed when huge waves. I got instantly sick enough we had to call my doctor when we arrived in Wisconsin. But, the staff was very caring and went way way out of their way to help! Amazing staff.Fortunately, the trip home was much easier and we enjoyed the crossing. So worth every penny. Families can do a one day trip very reasonably. Your children won't forget it!
