Paved, with multiple sturdy benches, picnic tables and rest areas. A brief section through Bay View unfortunately runs on the side walk along busy US 31. Our favorite stretch is from Bay Harbor to Petoskey's Marina, perfect place for a picnic near one of the two water falls, but busy on warm summer weekends. Paved trail has been recently extended to Alanson, so you can ride all the way from Charlevoix.
Well paved and safe bike route from Harbor to Charlevoix. Those gorgeous bay views can also provide sharp winds. Interesting close up view of the small airport between Harbor and Petoskey and the route at the end of the bay near Petoskey can be confusing so watch carefully. Ask at local cycle shops for safe alternate routes to avoid a couple of major uphill stretches!
This is truly a spectacular Wheelway. A lot of work has been put into the building and maintenance. You can start in Charlevoix and ride, walk, or skate your way almost to Mackinaw. There are many places to stop and enjoy the view or take a break on a bench. Water fountains and bathrooms at various locations are provided. You can stop in Petoskey for some shopping and food and then continue on your way. Excellent for those looking to get a work out or a leisurely stroll.
We started at East Park & went north toward Harbor Springs to the State park. Did this with a 6 yo child on the trail-a-bike. I think it was ~ 15 miles round trip. Stopped for a bagel & coffee at Big Apple Bagels mid way. I'm sure we could have found a better place to eat but we were not dressed for Stafford's & no locks with us, so bagels it was. The state park was desolate, one car in the lot. Just a different feel in the fall, so many less people. Trail was perfect. We did see other runners, walkers & bikers, but not many. Big waves on the bay, beautiful scenery.
Being an avid cyclist, I cycled this beautiful cyclist path from one end to the other and enjoyed every mile of it. Well maintained and offering some beautiful lake vistas as you cycle along.
We started at Magnus Park in Bay View and rode south. The views and the beautiful homes were fun to look at. Bay View was celebrating their 20th year anniversary so it is a very new town and very pretty. Then we rode back to Magnus Park and on to Petoskey State Park. The park had a beach and sand dunes. The trail was VERY nicely maintained with pretty landscaping and shelter areas. We ate lunch at a deli across the highway from the trail in Petoskey. There was a stretch of the trail, before the state park, that ran along the highway. I didn't really care for that but the rest of the trail is a definite must ride!
The Little Traverse Wheelway is a magnificent attraction. As far as we know it runs about 30 miles. We stayed in Petoskey and where is able to take advantage of it right there. Although it was too windy to bike ride we took several walks ; the views are magnificent as it hugs the water for much of the path that we used. And the surrounding area and landscaping is very well-maintained. A lovely feature of a lovely little city.
If you can ride a bike or walk and don't do at least part of the historic scenic Wheelway, you will be sorry. Bike rentals are at convenient locations. It's perfectly maintained, safe and the scenery is endless and beautiful. We did the section from Bay View to Bay Harbor and back, a perfect morning trek, easy pedaling, a perfect way to work off your breakfast!
Loved the bike trail! Wide and fairly well marked but you have to look for the bike route signs by the marina and Magnus park. We rode from Petoskey to Charlevoix and back but give yourself plenty of time. You do have to cross some driveways and streets in Petoskey so pay attention. The scenery was nice, especially by the lake. Wish every town had nice trails like this!
We used petosky as a home base where we rented bikes. One day went to harbor springs and all around the bay view area and the next day up to where the paved trail ends north of alanson, mi. The surface was great with views along the way, you can continue on tha path but it is grass and some weeds but flat enuf.
Great place to ride our recumbents . You can pick your distance and direction. Trail runs along the water in many spots.
My husband, 10 year old, 7 year old and I biked from Petoskey State Park to the Cliffs (not quite all the way to Bay Harbor) and it was a wonderful trip! I highly recommend this multi-use trail.
this trail is my favorite in Michigan. The bay is in site much of the trail and you can in at the deli in Bay Harbor. The barbecue chicken pizza is the best.
I came up here to kayak but took an extra day so I could explore Petoskey and the LTW. It was a great ride with beautiful views of the bay and quaint parks. I was told to go south towards Charlevoix which was perfect for me. I am thankful to the people who come up with these ideas and shared with so many.
Anyone who likes to bike should try this bike path. Asphalt and well-maintained. Gorgeous views of the bay. We preferred heading south from Petoskey towards Charlevoix. The path from Petoskey to Harbor Springs has a long stretch of bike lane along a busy road--too dangerous with kids.
