This is very cool historical place with great views and tasty places to eat. A good place for teaching about the shipping industry and seeing it in action.
I wouldn't make a trip just to see it, but it's worth seeing if you're in the area. It is interesting to see how the locks operate, as is the nearby museum.
Took the boat tour though the locks. It was awesome. Captain was very informative. A little expensive for a family of 5 but worth it.
very interesting and a nice multi-story review platform. You just share it with gnats, but who cares.
It was amazing to watch a 1,000 feet ship move through the locks. Looking down on the locks from the observation deck was an awesome experience for everyone. And best of all, it is free.
It was intriguing to see a huge ship be lifted up several feet by water alone. We took the boat tour so we could go through the locks oursevles. Very fun. Take a jacket.
We came here after visiting the Shipwreck museum, funny because about 7-8 others we saw there were here as well. Watched the Calumet come thru the lock which was cool because we saw this ship off the coast of Paradise while at the Shipwreck museum. There is a visitor center with info, maps, etc.
Very interesting watching the ships and the locks. Free to go see the locks up close with good views!!
Nice place to walk around and view the locks and river. Liked seeing fisherman casting their lines along the locks. Verry historical, and puts great Lakes shipping and its history into clear perspective.
Yes, it's that spectacular, particularly if you're as lucky as I was, to arrive just as one of the big freighters was entering the lock. It was fascinating to watch it slowly position itself in the channel, and then watch the ship sink down, down, down. Meanwhile, the lock on the other side also had an incoming ship, so while I was there, I got to watch two ships in the locks. If you're into ships, or transportation, or traveling with kids, this is well worth a stop. (I had to pay to park on the street, but there is no entrance fee to watch the locks).
We enjoyed it very much although we didn't get to see any freighters go through. Nice souvenir stores around town to pass the time
The viewing platform is nice and affords a good view of the locks. Unfortunately, if there isn't a ship passing through it's all a bit anti-climatic. My curious 6-year-old was hoping the museum would have video footage to show how the locks work. No such luck. Definitely worth a stop if you're in Sault Ste. Marie. Not worth going out of your way for, however.
Charming town. Informative and fun boat trip. Price $25.00 for 2+ hour boat trip thru the locks. Crew very friendly, helpful and knowledgable.
Simple yet interesting concept, good for a curious family about how this could occur, how it gets managed etc. We got to go thru 2 locks - smaller one in the up journey into the Canadian waters and the bigger lock in the return journey. My 9 year old was excited, and we were too... seeing how much water gets pumped in and out to bring the boat up and down tens of feet.
The visitor center is modern and very informative. Was disappointed they didn't have the movie explaining the locks running while we visited but it was great to see the ship transverse the locks. Great platform to watch from.
