今年开会的欢迎晚宴在博物馆举行。不大的地方,但是很有特色。里面很多反映美国拓荒史的油画。还有个屋子放的是二战期间从纳粹手里抢救来的珍藏。一个大学的博物馆如此令人震撼!
Small collection of very interesting art, in a beautiful two-wing building in which all visitors instantly feel like being lifelong members of an exclusive club of art lovers.
We could not believe that this was a free museum. Lots of priceless pieces and exhibits. They allow non flash pics in most of the area. Small gift shop, and refreshments for sale. Located around the busy campus area. May have to walk up to a mile to park but worth the wait. Make this part of your campus tour.
Excellent museum, intimate, houses both traditional and contemporary art. Closed Mondays. Go to UMMA web site for updates on new shows. Free or if you are able a suggested admission fee of $10. No food or coffee service available in the museum but the Michigan Union is across the street with a food court and coffee shop. It is made up of 2 buildings the traditional building known as Alumni Hall and the new addition known as the Frankel Wing. Great place if you have limited time. No parking lot so seek public parking or meter parking.
Right across from the MIchigan Union, the museum offers visitors the opportunity to relax for a bit and enjoy a nice collection of art. Not the largest venue, but they seem to make the most of the space. Highly recommended!
This is a very nice, albeit small museum. We mainly visited the contemporary regular exhibit, which had a nice collection with several Picassos. There was a temporary exhibit of female mid century minimalist artists which was very nice and well curated. Also, an exhibit on early Detroit - apparently the museum has an important collection on midwest history. The modern wing is very lovely architecturally and has big bright galleries. I like how there are little seating areas all throughout the museum, that works well if you are with someone who isn't necessarily as interested as you are in the art, or if you are with older folks or young children. I think there was a cafe or at least a sitting area although I didn't check that out. It's free and right on campus. Definitely worth a stop. I didn't visit the Asian galleries but they looked interesting.
The museum has an excellent collection of Asian art and one of the few university museums with a substantial collection of Korean art. For more, see http://www.umma.umich.edu/collections/asian.htmlThe museum also has interesting temporary exhibitions on topics related to local history as well as cutting-edge contemporary exhibitions. The shop has mostly gifts and unfortunately few books related to the collection.Overall, well worth visiting if you like Asian art and are interested in any of the temporary exhibitions.
This free museum in the middle of campus has many, many varied exhibits including old Masters, contemporary and modern art with commentary, fascinating and beautiful Tiffany glass (sister pieces are in the NY Met), pottery, furniture and more.something new around every corner. Would rally take 3-plus hours to see it all. Many spots to sit and relax ( not just the usual museum backless benches). Free lockers to store heavy packages/ coats, and beautiful views out the windows to the adjacent hustle bustle of the surrounding campus and student life.
The University of Michigan Museum of Art is a great place to spend a few hours in an afternoon. The museum is a great combination of old and new structures with wonderful pieces to enjoy.
The museum has a nice, not remarkable, collection. Positives include a manageable size and free admission (though donation is suggested). It took us about an hour to see the collection, though one could move faster or linger longer.
I make a visit to the UMMA at least annually, and I do it with 20+ five year olds in tow. Sometimes parents are surprised when I say it is one of our favorite field trips of the year, and I just tell them they should come along to see for themselves. There is nothing quite like an art museum, and for most kids it is a new adventure. The docents are wonderful at what they do, can answer questions at appropriate levels, and point out just the right details for five year old interest. The children react to the environment in a rather awed way, and love the wide variety of objects to behold. I love going on my own, too, of course, but if you have any primary age kids, whether in your family or your classroom, I highly recommend you go for a visit together, for their sake and for yours.
There were a few paintings that captivated me although I felt the paintings should have been better presented - like having painted walls to bring out the colour of the paintings. The private collections donated to the university was good. I found the mortuary articles from China particularly moving.
I first visited this museum 52 years ago. It has grown and is a very interesting museum. I especially like the stained glass. There are two buildings now and the collection is very nice. A must see for art appreciation in Ann Arbor.
This art museum, located on the University of Michigan campus, is definitely worth visiting. The main building, with its colonnaded galleries, is quite elegant; and the newer addition impressive. The collections of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass are pleasing and instructive to observe. It is also fun to see university students utilizing the collections as part of their classes. We have visited the museum on several occasions when in Ann Arbor. Exhibits change from time to time, so I recommend going back to enjoy the larger range of collections since many objects are kept in storage.
Fairly good-sized, well-curated museum with a number of masterpieces. Must-see for museum/art-lovers.
