I took my senior group (over 50 years old) to Hermann, MO on May 13 & May 14, 2014. On May 14 we went to Rhineland, MO which is only a few minutes from Hermann to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Catholic church is now considered a museum. It is breath taking. The outside and the inside are beautiful. On the property there is a chapel, cemetery, banquet hall buiding that has restrooms and a grotto. This property is set in the rolling hills of the Missouri River Valley in Gasconade County. It is so peaceful. I would highly recommend for senior bus groups.

I am not even sure how we first heard about this shrine, but it was a highlight on our trip to Hermann. We visited both the Church of St. Martin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and also the shrine and the grounds. We were there for over an hour, making our holy hour with the Blessed Sacrament in the Shrine, and then walking the stations and visiting the Lourdes grotto and the statue of Our Lord and the angel in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the original wooden shrine building. The local diocese holds pilgrimages to the shrine in May and September each year. Valentine Hall on the site was open for access to bathroom facilities.

What a surprise. We love discovering the unique tributes to religion. No written discription will do justice to this beautiful countryside location. It is thought provoking, and memorable. The grotto's are interesting. I would recommend stopping.

Small shrine to Our Lady of the Sorrows with the original shrine, outdoor grottos to Lourdes, the Holy Family, and Mt Olive, as well as outdoor stations. About 3 miles from the Katy Trail near Rhineland MO (mile marker 105 on the Katy Trail) Absolutely peaceful. On a hill with beautiful vistas of the hills around the Missouri River.

What a lovely shrine. We took my mother and grandmother here. It was worth the drive.

The Hermann Visitor Guide included an article about an upcoming pilgrimage to Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine in Starkenburg. So we set out on a rainy day to see more about this historical shrine. The log chapel dates to the 1800's. The stone chapel was completed in 1910 and includes some beautiful stain glass windows. There is an outside altar and the 14 stations of the cross in a lovely park-like area in the woods. The upcoming pilgrimage is set for May 20th. Definitely worth the drive.
