This little treasure of a museum is located in historical St Joseph, a few blocks from the Patee House Museum and the Jesse James House Museum. The movie is worth watching as it provides a great historical perspective of the pony express before you dive into the museum. There are many displays, life-size figures, and dozens of artifacts and descriptive narrations that take you back in history. Ample parking on street or in lots behind the museum. Admission was $6 for adults. There is a gift shop on site, no admission required to shop. Washrooms were also on site. Highly recommended for families, scouts, and kids of all ages!
The displays are great and very interactive great place to take your children to see and learn about the pony express. Patee park close by so you could have a picnic as well as a great step back in time.
I've lived in St. Joe all my life, and hadn't been here until I did my senior service hours. It's a great museum full of information about different things. The mannequins kinda creep me out, but then again, so do most. I not only highly recommend this to anyone visiting, I could also maybe see myself working there one day.
When u visit here make sure you visit Jesse James house and Patte House museum. All three sites are close to each, other within a block. Make sure u have your GPS.
6 months ago, if you asked me, "Have you ever heard of the Pony Express?", I would've replied, "Of course!" But if you then asked me to describe it in detail, I'd have said, "It was where people delivered mail...to the west...on horses...and, uhh, collected mail to bring back." I now know the very curious story of this brief-lived business venture thanks to this charming, understated museum housed in the former stables themselves (and how cool is that?!).A brief video, which appears to be low budget but made with love, leads you into a collection that detailed how the idea came about to deliver mail from St Joseph to Sacramento via the central route through the territories in a mere 10 days. The highlight of the museum is a huge diorama, probably about 30 feet long, that showcases the varied terrain a rider would need to endure, complete with sensor-activated enhancements (thunderstorms, heating/cooling temperature changes, etc). A great way to tell the story. You can make it through here briskly in around an hour, and then you can step outside to enjoy the vintage Route 66-esque Pony Express Motel sign before driving up to see the monumental statue in downtown. St Joseph is home to a unique piece of Anericana, and I'm glad they do it right.
We didn't expect it to be so large and we had to rush through it. It covers 2 floors and looks like it's about to go to the 3rd floor. It combines the Pony Express museum, Jessie James house and the Pantee Museum which houses everything western, everything train, cowboy, Indian (native American), Midwestern settlers. Give yourself 2-3 hours.
We took our eight year old niece, I can't remember how much it cost to get in, under twenty dollars for three of us, our experience was above average for a not-for-profit museum. A lot to see, nice helpful employees that knows the history of the Pony Express. Our niece left knowing what the express was all about.
This was the stop we originally planned. Very interesting tour with lots of pictures and stories about far more than only the Pony Express. The Pony Express was covered and we learned a lot we didn't know before. However, there is also an area that covers the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show that was very informative. The cost is nominal and well worth it.
This museum was very nice. Very informative, many interactive exhibits and very eduational. Was interesting to learn of how the pony express worked. Very friendly staff and cute gift shop too!
We are frequant visitors. Very educational, Wonderful playroom for children. The recent addition of Buffalo Bills new exhibit is well done and should not be missed. His continued association with St Saint Joesph is well documented and gives a good portrail of its place in his life.
It gives me the creeps, when being 79 years old, you see things standing there and being called antique.
Very Nice staff, great exhibits and lots of information on the pony express. Very informative and family friendly.
Great history of the Pony Express. St Joseph's claim to fame was always "Where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended"....Worth the trip and just a couple of blocks from the Patee House Museum.
We are following Lewis and Clark and almost didn't come because of the reviews and we were so glad we went. The pony express portion was small and the greater portion was concerning Lewis and Clark and Buffalo Bill.
The story of the short life of the Pony Express is interesting, but there just is not enough to make a real intriguing museum. There is a film at the beginning with pretty cheesy acting. It's made for kids, not people with a serious interest in history. The timelines and actual facts about the Pony Express are interesting, but much of the museum displays tack and has activities and areas for children, down to rocking horses, crayons, mail stamps. Wish we had gone to the Patee Museum nearby instead during our limited time. Make sure you pick up a St Joseph tour magazine (they are even inside the Museum) as there are two for one coupons.
