audubon center at riverlands

The Riverbend Migratory area is a wonderful location for bird watchers and nature photographers, especially during the winter months. There are so many species of migratory birds that come to the area via the Flyaway on their way south, but many call this area home for the winter. I saw a variety of duck species, a few trumpeter swans, and some American Bald Eagle closer to the Lock & Dam.

We decided to road trip and found this center. So since the weather was bit the best e went inside to check it out. What a great place to stop and check out the eagles and water fowl. Please stop for a free look at the nature at its best. So worth it. The guides are awesome.

Well appointed, clean and educational facility. Telescopes set up to view the beautiful swans and various birds in the area. Indoors and outdoor places to view wildlife. This is a very nice facility!

This is on the west side of the Mississippi, across from Alton, IL. Combine this with the Great Rivers Museum, at Lock & Dam 26 nearby, for a wonderful day. It's near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and near where Lewis and Clark began their expedition in 1804. A major flyway for birds traveling from Alaska and Canada to the Southern US and Mexico. Fabulous place to see trumpeter swans, and especially bald eagles, who winter along the River during January through March. Good orientation film; good spotting scopes to see birds on the River; all in all a great place to explore nature, less than ten miles from St. Louis.

The Riverbend area plays host to many bird watchers, especially during the winter when thousands of species of migratory birds come to the area. Some are just passing through on their way south, but many call this area home for the winter. Including several species of ducks, trumpeter swans, and the American Bald Eagle. Eagle watching season is very popular here and attracts visitors from all over. The Audubon Center at Riverlands is a great stop while you're out bird watching. Friendly, helpful staff, a few gifts for purchase, lots of educational information, displays, and huge viewing windows complete with spotting scopes to watch the eagles and other migratory birds all while staying inside where it's warm. You can also venture outside and stroll around their paved walking paths and out to their large observation deck along the river. On many weekends in January & February, the Audubon Center hosts events to celebrate the wintering birds of the area and often have a live eagle or other bird of prey, such as owls.

When visiting the Riverlands Sanctuary, be sure to stop at the Center. They have several displays showing the various birds, etc that are in the area. They also have a short film, and sell a few 'souvenirs'. They provide some viewing scopes, and when we were there one had been trained on a pair of eagles. A deck gives you access to the outside to take some pictures...be sure you have a long lens...A short drive past the Center, and you will be at the Alton Lock and Dam, and the entrance to the Confluence Park is down that road, also. Often you can see eagles feeding at the lock.

This was really nice! They have many displays indoors and a great view of the river. when we were there, they had many volunteers there and wildlife experts with all kinds of info. A live owl was visiting and there were spopes set up to view eagles, trumpeter swans, and ect. A nice place to visit anytime!
