This museum really does have a comprehensive history of the area. They do not dwell as much on music as do other museums in the Delta, but they have an amazing artifact room filled with Native American pottery, artwork, beads and tools from local excavations. This room also has amazing fossils from the area, including the larger portion of a mastodon skeleton and bits of Mosasaur vertebrae! We didn't expect this at all, and it was a treat! The nature room was also interesting, showing off various birds and insects from the area. Also on display here are beautiful works of art and artifacts and antiques from a wide range of time periods. The entry fee is very inexpensive, and it's definitely worth a look if you're in the area!

We had a great time, this is must go type of place. Even the kids enjoyed. My husband was very interested in all the history.

Very nice people. Old building. Lots of artifacts. "The Mississippi Swamp" was excellent. Much of the signage for the displays was very old, printed on a typewriter with the lettering fading or askew. Many of the display cases were old. Didn't look like much money was spent on upkeep. Signs to get to the facility were very much lacking and involved a lot of driving around and asking directions. For the most part the place looked worn out. I learned a lot about the area and there was a nice display of furnishings from an old home built around the mid 1800s and owned by the last Choctaw Indian Chief who became a prominent citizen of the area. There was a nice time line history of the area but it ended in the year 2000, 14 years ago. As noted, there was lots of stuff there, civil war items, fossils and teeth from Mammoths, farming equipment from the 1800s. With all the great items the museum possesses, it would be nice if the presentation was better.

This little museum is well worth a visit if you have any interest in the history of the Delta. They charge $5 and it takes about 80-90 minutes to do it right, although you could zoom through it in 45 minutes. There's a little something here for everybody: old artifacts of past eras, etcetera. What you won't find much of here is Blues history - for that you should visit the Blues Museum in Clarksdale. I wish this museum was right in the town center but I'm guessing they were donated this building on the outskirts of town (car is necessary) and that's why they're in this location.

Museum of the Mississippi Delta, formerly Cottonlandia, is a small locally managed museum with many exhibits relating to the history of the area. Pottery, Arrowheads, mastodon bones, trade beads , dugout canoes, etc, going back hundreds and in some cases thousands of years. There is also a display from the Civil War, WWI and WWII. A Mississippi Art collection from years of Competitions rounds out this museum. There are science exhibits for the kids too.

Found this little place on the way into town, the art and history presented are just wonderful. It should be right in the middle of town, but it is located instead in a dated one story facility on a 4 lane west of town. The historical panels were a fascinating and educational opportunity to really understand the culture and history, presented thoughtfully and fairly. No sugar-coating, very well done.

Small admission fee worth the Price. They also have great summer fun classes for kids for a small fee. Flexible schedule.

I am currently living in Oxford but I run half marathons and I was in town for one so I decided to stop here. The museum was odd. It's like a bad stereotype of southern history, referring to the Civil War as the the war between the states and a complete lack of diversity in the exhibits. I was pleasantly surprised by the room full of ancient artifacts from native peoples and fossils. Overall, it's worth the extra half hour to head to Indianola and see the BB King Museum for a true taste of Delta history.

Spend a couple of hours and steep yourself in the history and the culture of the historic Mississippi Delta. This museum has it all: we learned about the music, agriculture, people, battles and characters of this region. It is a well-lighted and easy-to-navigate museum with some highly unusual artifacts and antiquities. Great for all ages.
