Had somewhat of a feeling that the exhibits expanded to fill the magnificent, available space, but why not?The building had character and there was an interesting story to tell about it and it's role in history.
The State of Mississippi has done a great job restoring and curating its 1839-1903 Capital Building, now the Old Capital Museum. You can see the House and Senate Chambers, the Governor's Office, Supreme Court, and State Library - all housed in this one building. Especially interesting for me was a set of exhibits outlining the political process of Mississippi's rejoining the Union following the Civil War, and the long road that African Americans have had to travel to get full freedom. Thank you Mississippi for preserving your heritage and making such a nice museum in this fine building.
Contains an interesting museum on the history of the building. With all the structural problems its had throughout its history, it's amazing that it's still standing and appears to be in such good shape. The lady at the reception desk was very informative and helpful.
The old capitol building has so much history! The tour is self guided and the displays are informative. Free but a donation is requested. Worth a visit.
I am from Alabama, and I learned a lot on my visit to this museum. I stopped here and never even made it to the current Capitol. I'll see it next time. This place is worth seeing.
This was the Capitol used until 1903. It is now a great museum and is very informative. Beautiful place.
Though I appreciate the history of this building and the fact that the museum is free of charge to tour, I have to point out that it is still not a very good museum. The exhibits are rather dull and we did not spend much time there after we realized that we were not learning very much that we did not already know. The building itself is very plain.
Really love seeing inside the old Capitol Building and the exhibits it holds. Definitely a feeling that important MS and Southern history is being saved! We loved it without the kids and my daughter took a tour with her class and they all enjoyed it, too!
For someone whose roots are deep in Mississippi, the Old Capitol museum provides an easy way to explore the history of our state and its people. Thanks to the Department of Archives and History for preserving it for us.
This is a historic old building and is about a century and a half old. The place survived the Civil War and fell in disrepair. It was renovated and later neglected. Throughout the years, it has had a tenuous existence but has survived to become the museum that it is today. Its last brush with disaster was during Hurricane Katrina which took the roof off. The place is built in the Greek style both inside and out. Inside it has spiral staircases and is very ornate. Gazing up at the rotunda from the first floor almost makes one dizzy. There is a lot of history inside with artifacts and photographs. One can view a short film about the building's history. There is no admission fee and one shouldn't miss this attraction when he is in Jackson.
Beautifully restored and free of charge, it is a nice place to spend a few hours learning about the past. The rotunda is spectacular!
The Old Capitol was a great place! My favorite part of the Capitol was the Governor's Office. We went in, and we thought that someone was in there, but it was a statue! The Rotunda was beautiful, with great architecture. A definite stop when in Jackson!
It was nice that Mississippi has preserved its original capitol and made it into a museum. The ladies at the front were pleasant and the building is clean and well air conditioned. It was interesting to see the exhibits but surprising how little discussion of slavery there was; just a few passing mentions. I know I am in the Deep South, but given the damage caused by Jefferson Davis probably ranks right below Hitler, Stalin, Mao and others of their ilk. Other history museums seem better about acknowledging the negatives their states' past (and I include Australia) than this state. Time to give up the Confederacy!
Really enjoyed the varied displays. I really found the section about preservation of historical places in Mississippi really interesting. The museum is free. Be sure to check out the monuments on the grounds, the train depot behind it and the Merci car.
What a fabulous piece of history! The Old Capitol has been beautifully restored and provides its visitors hours of captivating history. I would not recommend this as a place to visit with young children; those with short attention spans might easily become bored. The architecture is astonishing and the interior is immaculate. We visited on a Wednesday afternoon in September; light visitation that day and probably a great time to visit.
