Eudora Welty's work includes short stories about typical life in small towns in Mississippi. My wife is the literary expert and loved seeing all of the details about Eudora's life, travels, friends, and home. I was along for the ride, and I enjoyed seeing the home and hearing about Eudora. We could not have had a better guide for our tour than Bridget Edwards, Director of the Welty House and Lead Historic Resources Specialist with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and obviously loved her work. If you like Eudora's work, have any interest in southern writers, or just like to see a lovely home and garden (it was dormant while we were there), you must go visit her home.
Take one of the tours ($5) and go through the side house and gardens. The main house is set to look as it did when Eudora Welty lived there in the 1980s--with the couches, tables and chairs stacked high with books, which guests had to move to find a seat. You'll find Eudora Welty was a strong, witty, interesting woman with many artistic abilities. Despite having lived in NY and traveled the world, you'll see why she made Mississippi and its people her subject. The women working at the house were very nice and helpful--I asked for a used bookstore and they directed me to Clinton, about 20 minutes away, where I found many Welty books at the used bookstore and antique store, When Pigs Fly, plus a very quaint, historic downtown.Be sure to check out the Fondren neighborhood, which is nearby.
On a recent trip through Jackson, Vicksburg, and Natchez, the quaint Eudora Welty House ended up being one of the surprise highlights of our trip. As recommended on the website, we called ahead one day in advance to reserve a tour and ended up on a private tour with a very enthusiastic and eccentric guide. We started in the visitor's center which included helpful and interesting information on the author we knew some, but not much, about, and which also included her Pulitzer prize certificate. There was a brief and amusing video about Ms. Welty (as the docent called her) preceding the tour through the house. The house has been restored to its appearance as it would have been in her later life (unfortunately no photos allowed inside the house) and provided a fascinating glimpse into the life and mind of the iconic southern author. There are books and history everywhere you step - my favorite parts of the house were the study and typewriter where she wrote almost all her stories and a small collection of whiskey bottles hinting to another side of Miss Welty. After the house tour, we were left to explore the beautiful gardens on our own and meander back to the gift shop where I purchased her Pulitzer prize-winning novel, The Optimist's Daughter, which I am currently enjoying. Perhaps the most unique part of the experience was the arrival of a local cat at the start of our tour (apparently fed by the docents at the house), which we both inexplicably felt was the reincarnated Ms. Welty still enjoying the peace and quiet of this Jackson gem.
In addition to being a Pulitzer Prize winning author, Ms. Welty was a valued neighbor and Mississippi treasure. Her home gives us the opportunity to learn more about her and how she lived.
The house and the grounds are really well kept. If you are a fan of this terrific author, the trip is really worth your while. Our guide, who was a volunteer, could have been a little more informative. However, we did meet the director of the facility and she was really interesting and enjoyable to talk to. It really is a beautiful and historic location.
My sisters and I stopped on our way to southern Mississippi - our hometown.I am an appreciative reader of Ms Welty's books and was totally charmed by the visit to her home. All around = the home, the beautiful gardens, the volunteers and the small shop are excellent.Kudos to all involved !
This property is located in a beautiful area of town and gives you a very peaceful feeling just to be there. I was not that familiar with Eudora Welty but after visiting the house and learning more about this wonderful author, I want to read her books and see the pictures that she took. Our tour guide was also very knowledgeable and obviously enjoying her work which made it even more pleasant.
I remembered reading something by Eudora Welty in my college English class so we decided to tour her home when we were traveling through Mississippi. It is a beautiful place along with the gardens. The woman who showed us through the house was very knowledgeable about the life and times of the famous author. The office next door has a lot of information pertaining to her. If you have time, spend a few minutes in the garden behind the house as it is well maintained. The cost for all of this is only $5 per person.
Eudora Welty was a keen observer of life in Jackson, MS, and people she met throughout the South, the Northeast and Europe. Her substantial writing career spanned seven decades and garnered numerous awards. She made plans to donate her home and gardens to the State of MS in the mid-eighties. That laid the groundwork for the wonderful job that has been done to open her home and gardens to those of us who want to get a real glimpse of who she was and how she lived. It was a wonderful experience made just that much better by the in depth sharing of our docent. A fine job and a trip highlight.
The staff and tour guide at Miss Welty's home were knowledgeable and professional. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. Jackson is my hometown, but I had never been to Miss Welty's home until this year. I am glad I went, and I highly recommend it.
Very disappointed that this was closed on weekends. My friends & I were hoping for a visit while we were there for the ballet competition.
We went here to kill some time on a HOT June weekend. I had heard of Eudora Welty, but I've never read any of her books. I love touring old homes, though, so it didn't take much for my husband to twist my arm. This tour can take awhile, probably depending on your guide, so make sure you allow enough time. Our guide was especially chatty and could've moved the tour along a little faster, but she was knowledgeable and knew lots of stories about Ms. Welty.
I love Eudora Welty's writings. In the grand tradition of southern women authors, Welty captured the smallest twinges of the psyche in her characters, and I've been a fan for decades, so thus it was that I nearly fainted when given the opportunity for a private tour of her home by her biographer. You can visit with a call. The video alone is worth the trip. And while you are in Jackson, don't forget Mr. Faulkner. : )
Such a personable house, great docent lead tour, the bookstore in the welcome lobby is a small treasure--a must visit when you are in Jackson
I have not read much of what Eudora Welty has written but I want to now that I know more about her. I did not know about her photographs and realized she was a talented, loving woman after touring her home. Her home is in a beautiful neighborhood and it was fun to see how she really lived. I can relate to her as I also have stacks of books in my home. The price for admission is very good.
