bluff point state park

We visit Bluff Point several times during the year. There are great hiking/biking/running/just walking trails from the parking lot to the point. It is about a mile to the point-that portion is fairly level with a wide path. When you are almost to the point, there is a pebble beach area that extends out into the cove for about .3 mile. Some folks just take a blanket and walk to the beach and just chill-out. Others whom like to climb on the rocks of Long Island Sound can be seen. Have to be a little careful and be respectful of the tide but it is safe for most children. Many people just walk to and from the point. Others bike the main trails and still others bike the "mountain-bike" style trails. Others hike these different trails. I have never seen a trail map, but if one looks at say Google Maps, one can not really get lost here as you can go as far as Mumford Cove towards the east. One nice newer feature is that if one leaves the parking lot and heads immediately to the east (left) the trail follows along the Amtrak line (safe distance) and you come to a bridge across the lines. Crossing the bridge you end up in Haley Farm State Park with more trails. This adds more mileage if one desires.At the parking lot there are some grills and picnic tables and a boat launch. One can stroll around the edge of the cove looking for shells, dipping one's feet, or just sit and relax. Across the pond is the Groton/New London airport which has some corporate and some private planes arriving and taking off-also fun to just sit and watch. All-in-all, just a great place to while away a small or large amount of free time. No food vendors are on site but several restaurants nearby.

I,ve lived with Bluff Point State Park as my back yard my whole life beautiful coastal hiking trails,biking, sailing,canoeing and so much more I actually lived there in a tent with several other families back in the 60,s& 70,s wonderful memories

Lovely trails, quiet tranquil woods and water. Lots of wonderful little slices of heaven to discover. Must see the giant rock and little salt water ponds. Lots of dog walkers, runners and fisherman. Watch out for equestrian excrement, as it's a definite locale for that. Yes, that's right. Horse poop.

I haven't been to Bluff Point in years and loved it as much as before. You start walling along the marsh, then through the woods, and then come out and overlook Long Island Sound. It is a great place to walk. It was a cold day but many people were enjoying the park. It is worth a stop if you are in the area.

Beautiful place to hike or just enjoy the scenery. Also would be a great place to swim or just watch the planes across the water take off on a nice day. Some questionable characters sometimes hang around here but they usually don't bother you if you don't bother them.

If you stay to perimeter, you will circle back to start. Otherwise many unmarked off shoots and cut throughs. Great trails, beautiful scenery. Husband and I ran a beautiful 4-5 mile loop yesterday, great way to start the weekend. Lots of walkers, dogs and bikers. Recommend.

We did the walk in good weather (Indian Summer), and enjoyed the views, the birds, the forest and the shores. Takes more than an hour to walk up to the Point and back, but was very nice

Good location for a 5 mile run in the morning. Quiet with great views of the shore. Get there at dawn to enjoy sunrise light on the beach. Not too hilly but also not just a boring run on the shore so a nice bit of variety.

It is a good shore point with very nice views and a nice spot for picture opporunities. You might see some water birds. If you just want to walk around, brung a chair and relax you will enjoy it.The airport is nearby so you might get the planes taking off and landing but as long as you know that it may not bother you.

I didn't walk around a lot, just walked the outskirts of parking lot at waters edge, unpleasant. Foamy water. Across water is airport runway.

It's a great place for a walk, jog, run, biking, and just for plain beach moments. All the stuff in one place..very convenient getaway for those moments when you need it the most. You can also Kayak, go fishing, swimming, bird watching, for bbqs, picnics, etc. It can get a bit busy during the summer time but even then it's a great place to hang out.

A great place to walk- I've gone several times and I always bring my dog (on a leash). A peaceful, easy walk along the water is great any time of day.I've seen lots of bike riding and kayaking too.

Easy three mile loop on the periphery, well maintained dirt road/path (no vehicles), with views of the water and marshes all the way. Across the water is the (not busy) airport for private planes, then views of Fisher's Island and the lighthouses. Great variety of people there, fishing, swimming, walking, biking -- but not crowded on a fine summer day mid-week. Plenty of shade. Take your dog for a walk (on leash) -- it's flat walking with no hills, but there are hills to climb in the interior for viewing spots. A hidden jewel -- the locals seem to know about it. If you are in Mystic, drive up here in 20 minutes and get away from the crowds and enjoy the views.

....so this means the place is not maintained very well. Like every other park in the state this one is in decline. But the beauty of the surroundings overcomes the neglect. This is still a great place to visit and hike. There is a beach, but its mainly stones and seashells.

This is one of my favorite spots in CT. Whether you are looking to hike, mountain bike, swim, fish, kayak, or simply lay on the beach, this place is great for it all. The main trail is quite large (like you can drive a bus down it) and will take you down to either a beach on your right side or rock cliffs to your left. The beach is thin, with water on both sides, and mostly all small shells by the water. But they are not sharp and can walk around barefoot with no issues. On the rear side of the beach you can find all sorts of sea creatures and many people go fishing for oyster, mussel and clams. You can simply reach in the sand and grab a handful. There are numerous smaller trails through the woods with differing length, location and elevation. They are marked well enough, but it is rather maze-like. You can always get your bearings by knowing where the water is. If you are adventurous and fit enough you can walk the cliff and hop along the boulders to some beautiful spots. Huge rock outcroppings. Also a beautiful view of a lighthouse. This place is pet friendly as well. Smaller trails can help you locate old ruins of houses that used to be there prior to large hurricanes. Great geocaching spots are here too! If you plan on going to the beach, you can't take more than a backpack because it is a significant walk, so no coolers etc. This place is usually not very busy, but if you go on a beautiful weekend day the parking lot (which is huge) can get full. Check this place out, you won't regret it.
