Construction on this paved walkway was started in the late 1990's. It opened up the banks of the Dan River to everyone. The really cool thing about this trail is that it is along the river bank and the wildlife does not seem to mind all the people. I have seen everything from osprey and cormorants to beavers and otters. The wildflowers are numerous and diverse. It is also a great place to ride a bicycle, it even connects to the mountain bike trail system on the downstream end at Angler's Park.
Danville Virginia has a hidden jewel. Our River Walk & Bike trails. They are kept clean and marked, for all to enjoy. Come have a picnic, mountain bike, or just take a casual walk along the cool tree covered walks.
The City has done a great job to open up several miles of the river bank from the center of town to link up two main parks (Dan Daniels park and Anglers Park). The path is wide enough for two way traffic (pedestrian, horse and bike) and is paved all the way - no loose gravel but a firm and not muddy. The result is a beautiful and peaceful promenade that follows the winding river Dan. It is clean and safe having walked it many times throughout various times of the day and through to dust. There are restrooms which are actually heated in the winter as they were this month (December). There is plenty of wild life to see especially Canada Geese, a variety of birds and ducks and plenty of turtles (look out for them sun bathing on rocks in the river. The river walk lacks any form of refreshment but a really nice add on to the walk is to cross the river on Main Street bridge and stop by the Main Street Coffee Emporium for lunch, cookies brownies and truly great coffee. The coffee shop is only about five minutes from the river walk and would be your best option if you do need refreshment after or during your walk. Also the science museum is just across the foot bridge which is the old railway bridge.A great way to spend a few hours and there are plenty of picnic benches at different scenic spots if you do fancy taking a picnic. A really good addition and thank you City for investing time, money and a good deal of thought in making this such a great success.
Great for walking or riding your bike along the Dan River. The trail crosses the river, there are waterfalls, feeding the ducks, fishing holes.
Took the pups for a 3-mile jog to tire them a bit ( see my hotel review for the why. Haha). Trail is paved, winding & flat. It is an easy, relaxed walk. One section, ghost tree island, is interesting. It is named after very large white sycamore ( wife says 100% sure sycamore is correct) trees which border the path. We entered the trail from 2 different locations. I recommend the Dan Daniel Memorial Park on ramp. 1 section is across the river from (possible) sewage or water treatment plant, so accelerate through breathing through shirt or proper apparatus. Enjoy!
Great foe walkers, bikers and sightseers. Clean and safe too! Many places to start and stop and exercise til you drop.
Our Dan River, named by William Byrd when he surveyed the line between Virginia & North Carolina @ 1728, is a magnificent river that starts at the Meadows of Dan on the Blue Ridge Parkway and meanders to the Albemarle Sound on the coast of NC. Wildlife, especially water fowl, and a huge population of native birds create a sense of serenity and escape along the miles of walkways. A well-defined mountain bike trail is accessed here near Dan Daniel Park. Further east is Anglers' Park. My favorite section starts at the Trailhead below the JTI Fountain near Jakes on Main. I walk there every morning with my dog to start our day.
It's several miles of paved trail beside the Dan river. Plenty of wildlife to look at and feed. Kids always like to bring bread to feed the ducks, geese, turtles, and fish. Actually saw bear tracks in the mud on the river bank summer before last.
We visited after having lunch at the Golden Leaf. The fall air was crisp, and the walk was wonderful. Take your camera, preferably with a good lens, to snap some great shots of all the Canada geese that live here. Great for nature exploring with kids too.
I loved that there is place you can walk along a beautiful trail with like minded folks. They ride bikes and run too. For young and old. Watch out for the fowls though those ducks will challenge you. We were accosted by a duck gang and had to man ourselves with sticks. I joined the new "Y" overlooking the trail and now exercise on the indoor track within the confines of a secure area -- a lot less "bills". Too many quacks out there.
The Riverwalk is a true gem in Danville. Well maintained and safe, it is great for bikers, joggers and walkers. The city has done a super job here.
If you're in Danville on a nice day, check out the river walk. It was really quite pleasant and long enough to give a bit of exercise especially if you're jogging. A very nice diversion in the city.
Always enjoy a walk along the river. Most people are very courteous, but some bike riders are going too fast. My pup really enjoys the walk. Lovely views of the river.
We walked the section of trail in the tobacco warehouse district. Nice wooden trestle bridge to walk out on for a nice view of the river and a paved path that was shady. Just a nice place to spend some time.
I love going and walking this trail. One of my favorite places in Danville. The fountain downtown is definitely a must stop.
