Old tasting room, but it was well taken care of and had charm. People were very nice. Had a large variety of wines, and most were pretty good.
We weren't planning on stopping at this winery, but after talking to Good Luck he advised to stop at all the wineries we could on the trail that they all try to work together. So we added Athena to our list for the day. What a delightful surprise! We found 4 wines we liked. Of the five wineries we stopped at on our trip this was our second favorite and we are looking forward to another trip in the future.
Athena was a stop I made touring the Chesapeake Wine Trail. It is a small vineyard that is owned by 3 retired nurses. The vineyard and wines are very pleasant. I stopped by here on my way out of town and happy I did. The grapes are still young but nonetheless the wine was interesting. Nightingale Red was one that I liked. They make a sangria (both a red and white) both are tasty and I bought a glass of the red for $5.00. So good and they will give you the recipe as well. Tasting is available and is around $5.00 and pours are very small however there are I believe around 6 that you can taste. A bigger pour would be better to help truly judge. The grounds are quaint and well kept. Small area to sit but the porch is a nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. The operator I spoke with was extremely pleasant and was happy to talk about the wines and did not rush us. The pricing on the bottles was fair. I would go back again to visit this winery. You will need to bring your own food to munch on though. They do have a small area that has some cheese, etc but I would suggest bringing a picnic if you want to eat. Plenty of parking and if you are physically challenged or bring wheel chaired folks with you, this is the place to visit for sure! Everything is accessible including the restrooms and the sidewalks are very wide.
Stopped by Athena Winery this past weekend. This is run by 3 retired nurses. The wine is quite tasty. The sample pours are very small. The White Sangria is delicious! You can purchase wine by the glass and sit in a rocking chair on the porch to enjoy it. The port had good flavor. A nice winery to try.
Athena was one of our stops on our self-guided Ches Bay Wine Trail girls' weekend. Three pleasant retired nurses are owners and operators. Athena is a little cottage tasting room and gift shop. Wines are very nice. You can purchase your wine in clever bottles...ships, violin, etc. The port is lovely.
