I was there briefly but loved the historic feel of VMI. Ohio has nothing like that. The castle like aspect of the buildings looked like a Hollywood set.
We drove through this wonderful institute while visiting Lexington, VA. The place was deserted as it was during the Holiday season. It gave us an opportunity to really have a nice look. The architecture is amazing, the grounds are well kept and it just emits History! We are so glad we had a chance to explore this amazing area! Do not hesitate if considering visiting; you will not be sorry!
This place seems off limits but there are lots of things to see. Museums open to public, parades on most Friday afternoons.
VMI is the best Military College in the Nation. The VMI Corps of Cadets is composed of the finest young men and women this country has to offer.
Friendly people. Cadets were courteous. Many improvements to the school in the past few years. Top notch academic programs.
The Virginia military institute is wonderful. Lots of great history and the campus is beautiful. The museum was awesome and I learned a lot about our history in it. The gift shop was awesome. Great prices. Got a few gifts and souvenirs for people in my family. Would love to go back again and explore more of the area.
Go for a public Friday 4:30 afternoon parade show !In the fall you might be able to catch a parade show at 10:30 amevery other saturday before a football game.Museum is really nice.
What a Great place to visit and attend. Campus looks like a castle with all sorts of History to it. Walking distance to downtown and the great local shops and galleries
My visit was simply a walk through the campus, watching the cadets walk to and from class and gazing at the building & memorials on the grounds. Worth stopping at. (There is a museum but I did not visit it on this trip)
My nephew transferred into VMI this year, and my son is also looking at VMI for next year. We came down for a visit in October during VMI Parents Weekend and tailgated on the parade field before the football game. I am a Naval Academy grad and Navy Football season ticket holder for the past 12 years, but I have to say I was really impressed with the VMI experience. The parade ground opens early for tailgating (07:30 AM) and the cadets march in a dress parade at 10:30 AM. I've marched in my share of parades, and the format is nearly identical to those at Naval Academy, but if you've never been it is pretty impressive. After the parade the cadets come out to the tailgates until they march on to the football field for the game. The stadium is Spartan by big college standards, but the crowd is close to the field and you feel very connected to the game action. VMI is full of history, the town of Lexington is beautiful, and has a great balance of old and new. Loved it!
I love walking through the VMI campus, it's so cool to see the cadets doing their exercises and drills and they're all so polite. On a beautiful fall day you could spend some time just taking in the scenery.
Long billed as the "West Point of the South", the VMI campus is historic and very picturesque. Some of the cadets killed in the battle of New Market during the Civil War are buried there, and you really sense the history in this place. Worth a stop!
Anyone looking to visit Lexington VA should find time to take a guided tour of this historical 'school' We were taken round by a female cadet who showed a lot of her pride in the Institute. It was quite a sight seeing all the students being put through their paces. Quite made my day being addresed as Marm at every turn. Lots of history to learn about as well
We visited VMI our a recent trip to Lexington VA. The campus is on a lovely hill overlooking part of the town. There's VMI Museum and Gen George Marshall Museum to tour. The cadets are all very handsome in their white uniforms and greeted us by tipping their hat and saying "Good morning, Mam - Sir". Very impressive.
The museums on the Campus are engaging and thorough. The employees and students are very helpful in getting you around and directing you through the campus.
