Great visit out to the woodward ranch. We ventured out on a sweltering day and did some 4x4'ing looking for the elusive rock. Its the only place on the planet that you can find it and we finally did. There were a plethora of other rocks we found and much to my 6 yr olds delight we found some florissant rocks as well. Great Lady guided us through our rocks and was top notch!!Will certainly visit again!
Owner was a total doll. For the $5 entry fee you can stay as long as you want (until close that is). To me everything looked alike but my son had a knack for it. He found some gorgeous pieces. The price per pound for finds it more than reasonable. If I had to do it all over again, I would allot more time for this activity. I alloted 2 hours but it just flew by.
I came here with some friends not knowing exactly how much fun could be had looking for geodes and semi-precious stones. We had a blast! There were wonderful agates to be found atop the ground. This was the highlight of our trip to West Texas and I am already planning for my return. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly. If you don't find that "perfect" stone on your adventure outdoors, you can visit the rock shop and purchase what you have been looking for. I highly recommend Woodward Ranch for friends, and family's.
We went to Needle Peak on March 10th, 2012. The weather was cool and just perfect for rockhunting - not yet blistering hot, as it will be in another month! We were rewarded - found a lot of amazing agate. This was our 2nd trip to Needle Peak and for any rockhound this is Mecca! There is gold agate, green moss and pom-pom agate. We found lots! Probably took home 75 pounds. We've also hunted agate twice in the past on the Woodward Ranch (nearer Alpine) and have found the famous red-plume agate as well as the beautiful flower-garden agate. Too much fun!!!
This was the 3rd time that we have been in over 20 years of visiting the area. This time took the grandkids, and it was just as fun for them. The owner is a retired school teacher and great with small children. When we got home and started unpacking, the nine year old wanted his rock treasures first.
