This is one of the best symphonies around the world, their performances are spectacular. Former Director was great, the newone, Colombian, is young, energetic and vibrant in every performance.
Love the symphony. Been going to this symphony since I was a kid. This is pretty much the only place in Houston for large-scale indoor symphonies. Miller Outdoor Theater sometimes has symphonic performances but then again, it's outdoors. The venue is quite good and you really don't have a bad seat in the house. Sound is excellent. The only drawback is that it's located in downtown Houston and it's very hard to find a place to park. My recommendation would be to park underground, under Jones Plaza (just across the street from Jones Hall). Drinks are very expensive here too, so be prepared. Negative points aside, I really enjoy the new Conductor. Really a top-notch conductor from Argentina. We recently saw the Mozart & Shostakovich symphony. Absolutely one of the best symphonic concerts I've ever seen.
The symphony continues to improve. They seem more lively and motivated under their new artistic directorJones hall is a great place for a concert, however, the elevators are a challenge for those who cannot walk the stairs.
When in the Merchant Marines docked at the Houston Shipyard in the 1970's, dressed up in suit & tie and attended this musical Rodgers & Hammerstein II memorable event. Academy Award winner Yul Brynner was in his prime. Based on the 1944 novel by Margaret Landon. Single seats were available. This was the Best Performance I had ever attended. Largest Performance Hall in Downtown Houston at that time.
My husband and I went for the Holiday Pops concert and it was lovely! They had a variety of songs and also included the choir. It was such a fun, festive evening.
I've been lucky to be a guest a few times at the Houston Symphony. I've always been happy with seating choices, the view and color choreography utilized in different performances. I've always left feeling up-lifted and pleased with performances.
The symphony was in perfect tune playing some lovely and rousing Christmas music at the Merry pops performance, and the conductor was entertaining with his old, bad but funny jokes!
Attended The Messiah during Christmas Season. It was awesome. I have heard this presentation many times and Houston has the best I have heard. It was worth the 250 mile drive from Central Louisiana to hear this orchestra
If you like symphony style music you will love the Houston Symphony. Consistently good in every program. I would go so much more if I had the money. Go - you won't be disappointed.
Houston's symphony is magical and equal to the New York, Boston and any other first rate orchestra around the world. The musicians handle each performance with precision and vitality. There is great energy among the entire group of musicians. Before each performance there is a lecture given by one of the symphony members, a guest musician or a music scholar. Very informative and helps understand the composers music of the night.
The Houston Symphony is world-class. They are talented, flexible, and truly seem happy to play together. Their themes for their concerts are notorious and fun to experience. I've been there many times, but my two most enjoyable events were when they performed with Tony Bennett and Kenny g. The symphony aslo does several performances at the Pavillion in the Woodlands and some Concerts in the Park that are very enjoyable. I've never had a bad experience.
The Houston Symphony is one of the very best Symphonies in the USA. They have a new conductor that works wonderfully with the group. We've had season tickets for 29 years and now purchase individual tickets to specific performances since I am handicapped and it is hard to go on a consistent basis but LOVE the Symphony!
We had season tickets for the whole family to go to the Symphony every year except last year. My kids who are young adults told us they missed going so we got our tickets and have not regretted one minute of spending quality time with our kids listening to the best musicians in Houston.
If you are visiting Houston, make sure to check the schedule for the Houston Symphony. The productions are excellent and Jones Hall has great acoustics. The symphony brings in talent from all over the world to perform with the musicians. Don't miss the Christmas Pops show, it is fantastic every year and always puts me in the Christmas spirit.
