This was the highlight of my trip to Houston. For a small collection I have never seen so much quality.

Beautiful building and galleries, good lighting and presentation of the works d'art. Unfortunately, our visits to larger, better funded galleries have made expecting more than what was offered.By all means, visit the Menil Collection, the works are genuine and fully reflect the talent of the artists. With your appetite whetted, then visit one of the major galleries in Chicago, New York or Paris.

There is a nice general collection - surrealism, African, Byzantine, among others. They also have four temporary exhibits, which were quite impressive. And it's free!

Very colorful collection fromt he Menil family. Exhibits include pieces from the very ancient to the very modern and abstract. It is free of charge for all and a great experience. One of Houston's best private collections of art.

It has been a few months since I last visited the Menil Collection. I first visited there during my college days in the 1990's, and the collection is still beautiful, along with the rotating exhibitions that you will find there.Admission is free (donations accepted, but not required), parking is free, and when you get done, walk over to the park and Rothko Chapel! If you're visiting Houston or have guests coming to Houston, add the Menil Collection to the "must visit" things to do! https://www.menil.org/

Their collection is focussed on surrealism paintings, but the quite rare specimen from 5000 to 2400 BC are unique, well displayed and worth the visit. There are two separate spaces that show Sy Twombly and Rothko.

The Menil Collection was founded by the Menil family and since then has been a Houston staple for locals and visitors. It is a smaller museum but plenty of art to show. Different works of art such as surrealism are available to see. What's great is it is free and donation requested. The museum is located in Montrose, which itself is a fun place to explore.

One of US's largest private collections, the Menil Collection is one of the best museums Houston has to offer! Although the Menil Collection's focus is on modern art, the museum also houses a small collection of antiques as well as a rotating exhibit that changes regularly. Aside from its main building, the Menil campus includes a beautiful park that is perfect for playing with your dogs, picnicking with friends or family, and simply relaxing. A little walk away from the main building are the Rothko Chapel (an interfaith chapel of black silence), the Cy Twombly exhibit, and the Dan Flavin lights exhibit. On a good weather day, the Menil campus is an excellent destination for culture and relaxation. However, if you are not into modern arts like me, you may not enjoy this museum as much because the majority of the Collection is some forms of modern art. Yet, the park and the buildings should be a must-have Houstonian experience to be had, whether you enjoy modern art or not.

We visited this museum after hearing the excellent reviews. Usually love small museums, especially museums located in homes, so fully expected to enjoy this place. The space itself is indeed very special - the symbiosis between the art and the architecture was impressive. The entrance hall has a few fascinating pieces. But it was all downhill from there -- the art itself just wasn't very interesting to me. I am generally open minded and enjoy many types of art, but I just couldn't get into the exhibits here. Also, their cafe is overpriced and the food wasn't so great. (Disclaimer: I'm pregnant so was limited in what I could eat - but still, for the prices they charge, you'd expect the food to be uniformly good).

I love small museums. Thirty minutes, and I've seen things that enrich my soul, and then I get on with my day.And this collection is truly stunning. Even if you are not into surrealism -- and the collection of surrealists is fabulous -- you might enjoy the Alaskan masks or the items from Papua New Guinea -- those were my favorites. The architecture is also stunning. And just down the street -- if you want to see something truly depressing -- there's the Mark Rothko Chapel. Egads. Terrible. But the Menil is worth it!

Some of the art was interesting. Some I would consider not art, like loops on a chalkboard. Any teacher has seen chalkboards like this regularly. Don't know why there are multiple ones hanging in a gallery.

Amazing collection of surrealist artists ! One of the best museums in Houston ! Not many people know this place, but definitely a must go place if you like arts. Worth every minute !

Hidden and in the middle of a neighborhood. A local performance arts group books performances in this gallery/house of peace that are moving and well attended. Best small museum and historical location to visit.

Great little gallery in a nice neighbourhood, set in a park in a residential area. The collection is amazing with a wide range of tribal arts, antiquities and surreal items, and they link together really well. There is a really creepy room that houses props that were used by surreal artists which is well worth a visit - kind of feels like the set of American Horror Story. The gallery also has a great community feel to it, with heaps of people hanging out in the sun in the park, which surrounds the building.
