Nice way to spend an hour or two or three, especially if you like history. Kids had a great time reading up on airplanes, walking on the flight deck. Even a trip to the head is interesting!
This is a great museum to visit, no doubt. To me the only real drawback is that there is *so* much information, I was not sure where to start reading and focus, and I felt pretty glassy eyed after an hour. They might do better to rotate some of their displays and information so visitors can really concentrate and absorb more. Or maybe I was just having an airhead day.
USS Lexington - a very interesting stop. We stayed only 3 hours, but this stop should have been an all-day affair, to take in all the sights and theatre etc there. Very big, and old. It never felt crowed with tourists, although it was busy all the time. There must have been a lot of volunteer work there to make everything possible. Very enjoyable, everyone should see this.
The USS Lexington was a fantastic couple of days visit as I went on one day and then went back again the next day. It really does take a lot of looking at to appreciate it fully. I highly recommend visiting the Lexington if you are in Corpus Christi.
You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy this modern military marvel but, the more you are into history, the more you'll appreciate this attraction. This is fun for the whole family. Who doesn't like fighter planes?
My young daughters (ages 11 & 8) really loved exploring the decks of this great vessel. Being a history buff myself I loved the exhibits and the chance to explore the many decks and rooms of this ship. We will be back.
I thought having motion sickness I wouldn't be able to visit it, but when I got there, I noticed there wasn't that feeling I get when I get on a boat, but the heights or being close to the edge was still hard for me. Got to learn a lot when we were there. got to see all around me from a navy's eye sight. got to see all the aircrafts, but it got too much for me, that we didn't get to see the bottom quarters, but everything else was wonderful!!!! but the most import part, my son had a lot of fun on there and he's really picky when it comes to visiting places.
We were SO impressed with this floating museum. It's worth every penny! The volunteers are knowledgable but not overbearing. Lots of great photo opportunities. The soft chicken tacos from the cafe were delicious and reasonably priced. The imax movie was VERY interesting (not good for small children). The lower deck (most interesting for kids) and Pearl Harbor (watch the video presentation for a surprise!) exhibits were our favorite although we enjoyed all of them. This is a hurried half day (families) or full day (adults only) activity.Tips:-Try to arrive as early as possible to avoids large crowds.-See website for $1 off ea ticket.-Review map to decide which of the 5 tours you want to take first (any order is ok). - Wear supportive footwear.-Don't take children under age 10 if you can help it.-The upper deck is windy. Don't bother wearing a hat.-Most definitely DO NOT bring a purse. Wear a backpack to free your hands to hold railings (think long ladders).-If you're afraid of heights, take the elevator, but you'll miss out on some of the experience.-If you are claustrophobic, some areas you will want to move through quickly. However, you will be ok!-Wheelchairs and strollers are almost impossible to get through any inner exhibits because all entrances are step through.-Bring a camera with fully charged battery and lots of memory space.
We stopped in during a trip to Corpus Christi. My son loved this. We were able to explore the whole ship and he didn't want to leave.
Loved walkign around the huge aircraft carrier. The recreated areas where the officers lived and worked were very interesting. Was fascinated by the sleeping cabins... which looked like coffins...:)Worthwhile to visit if you have some time.
We visited the Lady Lex on a rainy day during Spring Break. The weather may have been bad, but exploring the carrier, reading her history, watching the video about her with interviews with her crew was so fun and interesting. Our 14-year-old son also enjoyed the flight simulator. I have so much respect for the men who fought and served aboard the USS Lexington and I am glad to support all efforts to preserve her as a living museum.
We tour with our daughter and our granddaughter, it was a site to see for this had much to experience and stories of all planes and men and women who called this ship home. Planes and helicopters I had never seen before it was must have been a very amazing back during world wars.To see it took some extra energy if one wants to see it all and short skinny people doing it all would work best but I Am neither of those those things as a 67 year old man, but it was worth my efforts, my granddaughter loved all that area to run around. Great history, go see it worth your time.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the tour of the USS Lexington! We were at a private function for the Texas State Historical Association this month. The docent who took us up to the Bridge and out on the Fight Deck was impressively knowledgeable about the battles involving the Lexington, the officers and men aboard and each of their responsibilities. He took members of the audience and used them as stand-ins for the Admiral, the Captain, etc, which made the stories come to life! He was amazing!! I am sure all of the docents are wonderful, but I wish I had asked his name so I could send a thank you note to him! I can't wait to take my grandchildren and I hope he is there!!
I actually spent a night on the Lexington. Took a youth group. We began with dinner ... not much to brag about. We then were taken to a remote area for a "ghost story." The story-teller made it somewhat interesting and the guy wandering around in the shadows banging on walls, etc., tried to make it scary, but it was a little hokey. We were then turned loose to spend the rest of the evening/night exploring on our own. I had had enough after about 90 minutes and I was making an effort to be diligent in reading all of the material describing the different areas of the ship, etc. Bedtime finally arrived, but don't expect to get much sleep. We bunked where the sailors would have bunked ... and that was no fun. Each cot was no more than about 24 inches square ... top, sides, etc., and we were stacked three high. Not comfortable at all and the kids reflected that ... up most of the night, and, frankly, while I wanted them to go to sleep, I couldn't really blame them ... just not conducive to a one night's sleep. Maybe if you were a sailor on board for months, you might get used to it, but not a one-nighter. The next morning, following a very mediocre, cold breakfast (we were offered eggs, but they were cold), we stood at attention as the US flag was raised and then had another brief guided tour and then were turned loose again. We were supposed to spend 24 hours on the ship, but called it quits after about 18 ... and we paid a fairly hefty price for each kid. The ship is huge, but the experience could have lasted 3-4 hours and that would have been plenty and spending a night with 40 kids was not much fun as they were bored much of the time ... and, frankly, I couldn't blame them. Just not enough to keep them involved/interested. I wish I could offer better comments because I have a desire to be supportive of the veterans who run the program and what they're trying to do with the USS Lexington, but the over-nighter just doesn't get it. Sure, take the day-tour, spend a few hours, and develop an appreciation for the ship's history, but stay away from the over-nighter.
Worth doing if you can walk without problems. A few spots were scary if you have height issues, but you can avoid them. Do it.
