tate geological museum

I have recently gotten interested in different types of rocks. This is a great little museum to learn about rocks. Especially the rocks of Wyoming. I was a little disappointed in their dinosaur display. I guess I was expecting more from the big buildup that I'd read on the Internet.

Wow. This is a very interesting and informative museum and it is free. The fossils are very well documented and the stories well told. You can even watch volunteers "clean" up fossils not yet on display. We talked with two different employees and both were excited to explain and answer questions. This little museum has a lot to offer. Well worth a special trip to see.

This is a great little geological museum on the grounds of the University of Wyoming. Admission is free, but a small donation is appreciated if you can spare it. Kids will love the fossil critters, but there is plenty of substance in the text on the exhibits. You can easily spend an hour or two here, and there are a number of free publications pertinent to the museum and Wyoming geology, that you are encouraged to take away.The museum can be hard to find unless you access the Tate website. Easiest access is off the main road from downtown Casper, south to Casper Mountain - the museum is visible just to the west of this road. Make the effort - this little gem is worth it!

I stopped here for a visit while in Casper. The staff was very welcoming and informative. I enjoyed seeing the various exhibits, especially the old dinosaur type bones displays.

We took our three young children, expecting to do the obligatory museum walk-thru. We ended up with a great guide who enthusiastically answered our questions, allowed our kids to go 'off course' when they had questions, and made this one of the best museum tours yet. We'll done.

This little museum is amazing! There are tons of things to look at and touch (kid friendly adult approved)! We had a wonderful "guide" who provided amazing information and got the kids involved! We will be back!

This museum is sort of tucked away on the Casper College campus, which is already itself a bit out-of-the-way, and it was really a treat to stumble upon it when I was on campus for some business. It's a bit on the small side, but I think it's pretty impressive given the size of the college. The variety of materials on display and the thoroughness of the information presented make this a great place to stop. I learned a lot.

A cousin recommended the Tate Geological Museum at Casper College & mentioned specifically the huge Columbian Mammoth on display. We went out of our way to find the museum & weren't disappointed. The mammoth was there, lots of geological information, & of course, dinosaurs. Best of all, it was free!

We got there just before closing but the staff was still warm and inviting. We did not stay long as we were sure the staff wanted to start their weekend but they were telling us to look at the huge teeth in a drawer and just so helpful. We wished we had more time to enjoy it better.

I heard about this at the hotel and had to check it out. They told me that the mammoth was excavated in 2006 in the area. The museum is on Casper College's campus and is not difficult to get to. The mammoth definitely is the crowning glory at the museum - and you get to see a great deal of information about the dig process since it happened so recently. It was very informative and interesting. They even were showing a video featuring the professor in charge of the dig site discussing the process. There is a suggested donation, but you aren't pressured to contribute, but you won't mind it either. This is a must see if you are in Casper.

This university museum contains the skeleton of the largest Columbian Mammoth ever discovered. The other fossils and mineral displays were quite extensive for a relatively small museum. There are many hands-on displays for children.

Of course a donation is suggested upon entering the museum, but no one shames you for not donating if money is an issue. They have a very large whole Mammoth on display which was found in 2006 not far from Casper while clearing an area for oil work prep. If large equipment were not digging through the earth in WY preparing for industry , we would never know about these fossils. This is a very interesting place to visit and understand all about the geological resources of Wyoming. You can also observe geologists at work as they continue to find dinosaurs and slowly piece them together in the working labs at the Tate Museum.

This is a wonderful museum with an amazing variety of fossil displays of all of the forms of life that have inhabited Wyoming over the years. Dee the Mammoth greets you when you enter! A really nice assortment of t-shirts and other neat fossil and geology related stuff to buy in the store. Definitely worth a visit!!

The Tate Museum is on the campus of Casper College, and focuses on the geology of the region around Casper. It presents a general geological history of the region, and shows uses of local minerals, such as Bentonite and other resources which, while not particularly glamorous, are still very useful. The museum's centerpiece is a well-preserved Mammoth specimen, and the museum also presents many varieties of the mammoth's contemporaries. The museum is small, and has hands on exhibits; so even young children would find it interesting.

Loved the artifacts and information. They are currently working on a t-Rex and they take you out to their warehouse to show you the process. Excellent!
