The hot springs are fun and interesting to watch and enjoy! We photographed the scenery and walked around the springs.
This is an area in the northern area of the park that is spread out over a large area. Walking is an issue for one of the members of our group so we went to the parking lot next to the hotel and did a look from there. You can get closer but it wasn't going to work for us. There is a loop road that goes above the springs and the huge step-like deposits that cascade down the slope. We took that and were able to see the formations a little better. We even saw some mule deer! This is one of the popular sites in Yellowstone so it can be really crowded but it is worth a stop.
Stunning. Unbelievable. Other-worldly. Wow. These and many other words of awe will escape your lips as you walk around this extraordinary natural site. There's no question that the intersection of underground heat and steam with the chemicals of the area have caused a unique thermal area that has formed structures on the surface of the earth that you may never experience anywhere else on the planet. It's a big area, so plan on spending time here. It's also a big walking experience, so wear good shoes. If you are coming to see the Springs from elsewhere in the Park, it is probably a day-trip... and well worth the time.
Lots of boardwalks and stairs to walk and see many great views. Lots of geysers, mud pots, springs and unusual formations to see! The parking along the road was packed, but we eventually found a spot. Plan over an hour for the main area and be sure to bring a camera! We saw lots of elk just hanging out as well, but be sure to keep your distance!
This looks like space! Geysers, hot mud pots & some water springs flowing here. Very unusual! This is one if the best spots in Yellowstone. Plus the Elk invade the green spaces near he buildings so you have hat to look at too! Just loved it!
Our day trip to Mammoth springs was beyond belief. If you can cope with the sulfur smell- you will be able to appreciate what this unique location has to offer. Highly recommend a visit,,
Love all of Yellowstone but this area is my least favorite place. Been twice and it's ok. Still a must see if you've never been.
This was our first stop on our trip and we drove to the top parking lot and walked down the boardwalk first and then back up. Being that we just arrived, it was a little harder of a walk on us than it should have been, as we hadn't adapted to the elevation quite yet. So bring some water and prepare to take it slow. Take the 50 cent brochure and learn about the Geology and Chemistry - it's such a unique site and there is a lot to learn about.
Features here are quite different from thermal areas other places in the park. Travertine formations grow rapidly compared to the formations made from limestone. Hot water dissolves the limestone leaving on the surface, chalk like material. There is rapidly shifting activity here at the hot springs so don't be disappointed if the spring appears to have "died," Don't forget:1. The springs location plays a part in this appearance, 2. flow rates change/fluctuate daily, and 3. The total amount of water the springs puts out also fluctuates daily.
Near Mammoth Village is the Upper Terrace Drive (less than a mile long). You can see some of the thermal features driving the road but if you have the time, I recommend getting out of your car for a closer view. Our first stop is an overlook with a nice view of the mountains and Mammoth Village. We take some time to enjoy the walk to Canary Spring.. On our way, we pass Grassy Spring, unnamed thermal areas and ghostly trees. We cross a footbridge, down a few stairs before reaching Canary Spring. From our viewing platform, we see the colorful orange terrace steps. We continue driving the one-way paved road which, at times, is steep and curvy. Our next stop is Orange Spring Mound. Because it is right next to the road, many people don't stop - they just drive slowly by it – parking space is limited. But there is a short walk along the side of it offering a different view of Orange Spring Mound. There is so much to see and do in Yellowstone that sometimes it is hard to pick and chose what you have time to do. The Upper Terrace Drive doesn’t take much time to drive. So, take 20 minutes or so and at least drive the drive.
Great views and great pics! The hot springs were amazing and way larger than i thought. Boardwalks all around the place so that you can walk around the place and see almost every inch of the place. We spent about one hour to see it. No dogs permitted and parking is limited but you will not be disappointed.
