I never thought too much about the water tanks as being an attraction, but I have to confess that I admire them every time I pass by, so they must be. There's a little area history on every one and they are all well done.Take a look at the art on the bridge underpasses while you're in LC. The local flora and fauna are depicted and they are quite nice, if not as artsy.
These are colourful and historical. A great addition to the city . Just do a circular tour . Worth the time
Since I live here in Las Cruces; I get to enjoy the Southwestern Art work each time I drive past a water tank alongside our Interstate Highways!I have traveled east to west and north to south and never saw water tanks with art scenes on them representing local history! My compliments to the one with the idea as well as the creator of the various scenes and those who painted them! Thank you!
Artist is Tony Pennock. We love these. Used to live in Cruces and still drive down from Placitas, NM to visit and eat the best New Mexican food in the world. There is one on I-25 near Fort Seldon l and one near Alamogordo as well. Truly beautiful works of art by a great artist. Here's a link to an article about him from The El Paso Times: http://www.elpasotimes.com/columnists/ci_14672304 which talks about some of his work we've never seen. His mom, Carolyn Bunch, is also a wonderful artist. We're lucky to own several of her drawings and paintings.
Just drive round and you will find them. All very well painted and free. They are works of art. They look to be historical scenes.
These are all so cool - look up GUYS and see these huge works of art - they are all over the area - 4,000 square feet water tank mural for the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico = Agua Fria depicts an agrarian scene from the Mexican colonial period that occurred in Southern New Mexico around 1830, when the regions first settlers traveled up and down the Camino Real and established their colony in the Mesilla Valley.
We enjoyed looking at the murals, and thought it to be a very clever way to incorporate art into the desert!
As we drove into town we saw the first water tank with its beautiful mural. Be sure and drive around to see all three. All are beautiful and worth seeing.
You see these as you drive around Las Cruces. One is between I-25 and Triviz so you see it whenever you drive either one -- a bit before Exit 3 on I-25 and sort of near the right turn onto Griggs Ave. on Triviz. They have recently been repainted. It's so nice to see colorful historic scenes, rather than dull grey water tanks that some other cities have.
My wife and I live in Las Cruces and take pride in how this small city goes out of its way to paint the local water tanks with interesting and historically informative murals. They are fun to look at and remind us of what a long and colorful history we have.
You don't really have to make a special trip anywhere to see them. If you are driving around town much just look around, there are several. All have really nice southwestern murals painted on them.Someone did some really good artwork.
