Tome Hill is testament to the faith and convictions of many residents of Tome and surrounding environs. A rigorous climb to the summit will reward you with the up-close trio of hand made crosses, candles and rosaries brought by the faithful in fulfillment of personal promises. The view of the valley is breathtaking. Well worth the effort to go up and contemplate your life and your immediate world.
Climbing and exploring Tome Hill is a pleasure. It's an easy climb, particularly if you take 'Granny's Way' from the west side. There are over 1800 petroglyphs tucked away on the hill, indicating the hill's use in pre-historic times, most likely as a vantage point and a way to escape river flooding. You can visit the modern crosses at the top, and there are 2 geocaches on the hill. When at the top, enjoy the vistas of the acequia system and the irrigated valley to the west, in contrast to the arid llano to the east, which extends to the Manzano Mountains. This is a great little trek, particularly in cooler weather.
Nice Hill to do some hiking in the middle of Valencia County. It is nice and peaceful up there, nice to get away and reflect on life or say some prayers, also nice views of the valley.
Worth the hike to the top of the hill to sit and look over the valley, pray while under the crosses, and take a break from reality. Peaceful and pleasant--be sure to take your own water and wear good shoes and a wide-brimmed hat. No shade--no potty--no water.
My husband and I don't live to far from here and hike the hill a lot! Its really beautiful at the top. It is a must do if you like to be outdoors.
Once I found the park area to make the climb up to Tome Hill, it was very pleasant. I committed getting to the top and it was very doable, taking me about 40 minutes up, 15 down. The sculptures were great as they are throughtout NM and had several markers with information of the area. I do wish there was a restroom though. Climbing the hill I could see the three distant crosses at the top. I counted several centipedes on the path the way up and down. It gains about 350' elevation and there is also a less elevated longer path that is usually used by people on Good Friday. Such a beautiful 360 degree view, very peaceful. Be sure to carry out all trash with you and leave no marks.
