Nestled in the hills in New Ulm, Minnesota, this was an hour well-spent. Birthed well before the prohibition, this brewery has done two things well. It has stayed in the family, and it has branched into the craft brewing marketing space. It is a nice 40 minute tour followed by a very nice and very generous testing of a number of their beers. It was great to see. The tour was interesting and beers are very good. $3. A steal

We had friends visiting from northern Minnesota so we took them to Schells. They enjoyed the tour, the beer processing area and all the old buildings. The Brew Pub is a very nice and comfortable place to end the tour. Everyone except me sampled 6 or so of the Schell's products. Turned out that our friend has been a Nordest fan for some time. I am not a beer drinker but I did enjoy the 1919 Root Beer that is made by Schells.

We loved our visit but the museum was closed as well the beer tour. Wish it would stay open later in the year

Very worth it to see this oldest Brewing company in MN and 2nd oldest in the US! They do a great job explaining the beers and letting you taste them.

While smaller than places like AB in St. Louis or Coors, the small but quaint brewery has a nice family feel to it and while the tour wasn't all that grand and informative, the sampling room was nice in how they spent the time describing each sample and what to expect, etc.

I take this tour every time I am in New Ulm. The people are friendly and the grounds are very beautiful. There are always peacocks walking around freely. And you have to love the beer tasting at the end!

Kids and grandparents both liked the tour. History filled with beautiful grounds. More action to be seen if you go during the week when the brewery is running. Generous beer tasting at the end of tour plus kids get 1919 root beer. Lenny was a great guide!

Well worth a visit. I was disappointed to miss the tour and a tasting, but I still enjoyed stopping by this small brewery. Their beer can be found all over the state.

We were very pleased with the tour. Our tour guide is a school principal. He was very informative and enthusiastic. The tour last about 30 minutes or longer depending on the number of questions. After the tour, there is a beer tasting of six different brews and/or their 1919 rootbeer. 1919 is the year prohibition started. They also offer an additional full tap beer after the tasting. The tasting room has the look and feel of an Old German hoffbrau house. The tour includes a look at the outside of homes once occupied by family owners and their current use. A look at earlier brewing methods and the current operation. Past and present machinery. How good source water was provided for brewing over the years. The current expansion of the brewery. How the brewery survived the prohibition years. A history of the family (the original family are also the current owners). Past and current bottling methods, etc..You can also walk the grounds, which include an extensive terraced flower garden area. There is also a deer yard. The setting is very picturesque. The short drive into the brewery is also interesting. You can also walk through a nice museum with many interesting items from the past and present. They also have a shop where you will find lots of items related to the brewery. The charge is $3.00/person, a great value. We have been on other brewery tours. This brewery tour ranks as the BEST! NOTE: They do not sell beer on site. Their policy is to not take away beer sales from those businesses that stock and sell their products. Admirable!

Nice friendly people. We loved the tour & hearing about what we have here in Minnesota. The taste samples were very well explained, and if you weren't a beer drinker for taste testing - that's ok. You could have a non-alcoholic 1919 root beer instead.

This was a fun brewery tour. Our guide was great. You have the opportunity to taste quite a few beers, and most of them were good. The grounds of the brewery are really pretty. The merchandise area was seriously lacking taste and organization. Worth the trip.

Interesting historic site, pretty gardens, good beer. Felt a little sorry for the roaming peacocks being chased by children!

The tour was short and simple. There are plenty of things to look at (gift shop & "museum") before the tour. Tasting was great and relaxing. We came for the last tour of the day & spent time looking around the gardens.

I saw this again in the visitor's guide and decided that I wanted to see it. I wanted to see the difference between a brewery for beer and one for whiskey. I thought it was a very good tour. Again I did not climb the stairs but what I saw, I was impressed. Plus at the end of the tour, you get 2oz of 6 different types of beer. I am not a beer person but I discovered a beer that I liked. It was the Schells Shocked, which is a seasonal beer. Plus you could also get a glass of the 1919 Rootbeer. It was a really good rootbeer. The tour guide was very informative. I would recommend this tour to anyone.

You will like the tour and free samples at the end! Tour guide was excellent, he was great with the group as well as knowing the Brewery history.
