this is a beautiful drive or walk or bike ride. Each lake is about three miles around with five connected by water. The homes are beautiful and great atmosphere. Lake Harriet has music every night in the summer. Well worth spending an evening with the chain of lakes.
If you want to get to know Minneapolis, visit the chain of lakes. You can do driving, on foot, and even on a Segway, but the best way to do it is on a bike! Don't forget to stop at one of the trendy food or coffee joints on the way.
Love the lake Harriet rose gardens. Each lake has its own character. Great house/mansion ogling on the rounds. Terrific bike trails and bike rentals. Even the adjacent to lake Calhoun Lakewood cemetary (and its chapel) is amazing
Get here early - it gets crowded because there is so much to do! We went canoeing and also rented bikes after because we were having so much fun. If we had more time to spend here, we would have brought some snacks and took a break halfway around the lake. If you love the outdoors, this is a must while in Minneapolis.
They have a bike path around the lakes so naturally we found a bike rental place and had a great day riding it is great fun to ride when it is this flat
I thoroughly enjoy the Chain of Lakes no matter the time of year or mode of transport. They are great to hang out at during the summer when free events - or just people watching - abound and have a charm about them throughout the year. I make sure to always take visitors here and will often just swing by for a solo round if I find myself in Uptown with some time on my hands. Very nice.
I have lived in Minneapolis for decades. The chain of lakes has been at the center of that experience. From playing volleyball at Lake Calhoun to riding bike/running around the entire chain. Enjoyable all four seasons. A must for visitors who wish to understand our city. And I met my wife at Lake Calhoun..... Just sayin'
In the heart of Minneapolis with a beautiful waterfall and a huge park! Worth the trip! Fall colors were beautiful this year!
Minneapolis is the only City I have been too that can offer this fresh water lake experience right downtown. The City is surrounded by ten (10) to twelve (12) beautiful lakes. Minneapolis takes their Lakes serious and has running ,walking and bike paths around all the Lakes. During the warmer months several of the larger lakes have bandstand and concession stands that offer traditional snacks, canoe rentals and evening concerts. Nothing can beat a Sunday drive with the windows down around Lake of the Woods, Calhoun ,Harriett and then down Minnehaha Parkway to the Falls. Better yet rent a canoe and tour Lake of the Woods and Cedar Lake.
Continuous trail (although we didn't go all the way) around the beautiful neighborhoods. Would have loved to have the time for a run when we were there!
See this area on Sunday morning before the city wakes up otherwise it is to crowded with people wanting to be seen in an upscale location.
This is one of the highlights of Minneapolis. There's so much to do. You can walk, bike, canoe, sail, swim, sit and picnic. In spring, summer & wall, with the right weather, they are beautiful.
Minneapolis knows how to showcase and utilize urban lakes/green space. Take a drive or get out and walk. Great signage, good vibes, beautiful nature and homes.
the lakes are more of less similar, but Lake Harriet has a beautiful house, a place for concert, wedding, etc. also has some snacks and drinks can be bought. lake Harriet and Calhoun is more crowed, I like lake of Islets which is more quiet and the view is good.
what is not to love about Lake Calhoun--great walking area--beautifully taken care of and not only do you get great exercise--it is also great people watching:)
