I grew up in Humboldt, Iowa and returned home to spend time with my parents. However, with my own family, I wanted to share an experience with them that also brought back memories for myself ... so, I took them camping on the "upper loop" of Sheldon County Park. Excellent choice! The campground was well-maintained and offered a number of recreational opportunities for most any age group. The lower campground had an 18-hole Frisbee golf course ... with some incredible fairways through timber stands (up hill and down hill). We did not plan for this experience, so the campground host loaned us some Frisbees ... which the kids had a blast. The lower campground also offered a boat dock, which can be used for fishing. The West Des Moines River flowed by at a nice speed, making the catfishing easy and enjoyable. As for the upper loop campground, the bathrooms were GREAT for a small county conservation board (site). Although we did not use the showers, they were hot ... and, the counter area was perfect size for multiple campers. Believe it or not, we had the entire loop to ourselves, except for the campground host. He even gave us free firewood for our two-night stay ... and stated that the wood was "always" available for the campers. As a former Humboldt citizen, I was proud to show off one of my favorite parks as a kid to my family. I had a great time camping! NOTE: My only concern is for the 30 amp fuses in the upper loop campground. We were told that the conservation board staff is planning to change them to 50 amp fuses this fall to accommodate larger RV units next year. We hope this does not happen ... as pop-up camper spaces will disappear. RVs already have LOTS of spaces at Sheldon County Park ... why make more?
