The parking area is a bit small, but it was a snowy Sunday and few people were there. Great for observing eagles flying over the dam and perching in trees.
If you like to walk, it is great to trek over to Illinois. There is a walkway on the south side of the hwy bridge. That along with the observation deck and a barge passing through the locks, was a wonderful afternoon.
You can walk out on the olden wooden bridge and see the historic toll booth. You can only walk out to where the water starts though. Wish you could walk all the way across. Didn't get to see the lock and dam work, but it would be cool to. Not a bad stop. Nice walkway.
Not real exciting. Though we did get to see a boat go through the lock. There is also a swinging railroad bridge and we got to see that in operation too as a train went by.
The bridge observation deck on the mighty Mississippi offers a great opportunity to visit an area steeped in history, where barges still traverse the "Father of all Waters". Lock and Dam 19 is located there. The dam was once the largest water-powered generating source of electricity in the world. Watching barges go through the Lock is fascinating. The Observation Deck and the Victory Park area (a short distance to the south), also offer great views of America's national symbol, the Bald Eagle, during the winter, when there is always open water near the dam, where eagles feed on fish. Another great time to visit Keokuk is during Bald Eagle Appreciation Days January 17-18 2015. (See Google for more information).
My husband and I stopped here to stretch our legs after a long drive. It looked interesting. The old toll booth for the bridge is still there and they have turned the old bridge into a small boardwalk to the lock. We didn't get to witness any barges goin through but it was neat to see. Guess I never really gave any thought to how the barges traveled down the river in places where it was dammed.
Liked everthing about this hotel. Espescially the great staff. Had a very good breakfast bar. Really enjoyed the inside pool. We spent a lot of time there. The manager was super very friendly. The hotel is in a perfect location for eating and shopping. When I want to see my grandson will always stay at this hotel.
The river view is beautiful and we were hoping to see some ships go through the locks, but that did not happen. It is a lovely 5 -10 minute walk, though.
Nice hike out to the viewpoint for the dam. This used to be a bridge across the Mississippi and the toll booth is still here (don't use the rest room facilities). The early morning hike was wonderful and the view was interesting. Worth the hike!
It was a very cute walk to see the river it just doesn't show much of a view. It is positioned under the main road bridge so all you really see is the bridge above you. It is also looking very old and worn. I think it may need a little bit of an update.
