We were chasing rainbows, trying to escape rain, and played Patriot Hills on a complete whim. Mid-week rate was very reasonable. The course is a bit short, even from the back tees, but very enjoyable. Fairways are generous. A bit of rolling terrain means that you'll get plenty of lies that lean a bit this way or that... This was the midst of a rainy week, but the course drained well, and the greens were perfectly fine for late season. Friendly staff. Definite recommend for this area. If you work your way back toward Knoxville, you should also try River Island GC in Kodak.
Course is in nice shape...but it has its rough spots. There some interesting holes and some that are so restricted by available land that they are a joke. ( trying to figure out where to hit your t shot from the blues on #11 without local knowledge would be impossible. Greens rolled true. The course is built within a planned development. Houses are safely set back except on 18 where the houses on the left are separated from the fairway by only the cart path. The course is public but has memberships. I was lucky to be asked to join a group of three members who made it a really enjoyable day.
Patriot Hills Golf Club and The Sevierville Golf Club are the two courses that play most often. It is not uncommon to see frayed jean shorts and graphic teeshirts on the course which is unfortunate; yet in no way takes away from this great course. It has time and time again been in pristine condition when I play the course, and the pin placements are always challenging as well. I scored my first fairway Eagle on a par 5 at this course! The staff is always very friendly, Southern Hospitality is not sparse in these parts! I hope the staff continues on the path they have been traveling as it is a great one. I look forward to another tall stack of blue score cards this season!
Club house personel make up their own fees based on whether you are a local or a Yankee. This course does not have yardage markers on many holes. Those that are marked-----have markers that are very difficult to find. I was charged a trail fee and cart fee even though I was sharing a privately owned cart with a club member.
We stayed at a timeshare near Gatlinburg that had a course on-site but we chose to make the drive to P. Hills because of it was a good deal and sounded like a better course - and it was both. PH has a nice warm-up range with decent prices for balls, and the pro-shop staff was friendly and accomodating. The course itself was a lot of fun to play. While it is in a housing development, there were no holes in which hitting a house was likely - except perhaps on one long par-3 on the back. On many of the holes, one had to drive UP to the next tee from the previous green so that there were far more interesting - and scenic - downhill tee shots than blind uphill shots. In fact, we were very surprised at how few blind shots there were on this hilly course which is always appreciated when you are playing an unfamiliar course. However, there were no holes I considered unfair, silly or gimicky - it was fun test of golf. My wife is relatively new at golf and plays to a 40+ handicap and she also enjoyed the course very much as the forward tees were well placed and hole length reasonable. The course was in good shape and showed the presence of decent course landscape management. (The only negative comment we had was the large number of improperly fixed and unfixed ball marks on the greens the day we played - sadly, more a commentary on the golfers than the maintenance staff.) We would play there again on a trip to the area and next time would hopefully have time for a round at PH's sister course at Dandridge.
I'm a local who plays Patriot Hills often, as it is a great value and a fun golfing challenge. Compared to most courses, the greens at PH are large, and in some cases pin placements (marked by red, white and blue flags for front, middle, back) might mean a two club difference. For example, if the pin on #5 is on the front, I'm hitting 8 iron, but on the back it's a 6 iron. Nice, true, rollable greens kept in good shape nearly all the time.Like its sister courses at Dandridge, each nine at Patriot Hills features 3 par 5's, 3 par 4's, and 3 par 3's. The par fives make it a scorer's course. Of the 6 par fives at Patriot Hills, 4 are reachable in two shots for decent golfers (depending on which tee box you use). All of the par 5's are interesting holes. The only complaint I've ever heard about Patriot Hills is that sometimes you can hit a drive in the fairway and be left with a side hill lie on your approach. That's true on some of the par 5's, but it's nothing unfair. The course is fair all around in my opinion. If you're travelling to this area and are looking for good golf at a nice price, Patriot Hills is a good choice. At a slightly higher price, also consider River Islands in Kodak, as it is a memorable layout and unique golf experience.
Just got back from Pigeon Forge where I (and my teenage boys) played four different golf courses. The best course by far was Patriot Hills. It's about 30-minutes away, but well worth the drive! The lay-out is great: A nice blend of holes which present different situations. Most of the fairways are tree-lined so you DON'T get the feeling you're playing in a big field. And though there are houses around, they are all set well back from the course. The roughs were cut (1st and 2nd) appropriately and were in great shape. The greens are very nice and present good challenges (without being crazy or goofy) and are diverse in size and contour. The tee-boxes are especially wonderful! They are, for the most part, level and in almost puttable (metaphorically speaking) condition. For the price of 33-bucks this is an excellent golfing bargain. I've played a bunch of golf in Virginia, Myrtle Beach, and Vegas. Here at home this place would set you back about $60, in Myrtle even more, and in Vegas...forget about it! So, if you've got the kids with you (like I did), and you're trying to keep it under $150...go to Patriot Hills...you will not be disappointed!
