Great experience on the top of Roan Mountain. The top is an open, large grassy area (bald) with a view that takes your breath away! There is almost a 360 degree view, and the sky is usually clear, as many of the clouds are below. Expect a drop of 10-15 degrees from the base of the mountain to the summit. Even in the summer, bring a sweater! The sides of Roan Mountain have an abundance of Rhododendron shrubs that are celebrated every spring with a festival and events for kids and adults. It's closed for the winter months.

this is my favorite destination to hike ,view awesome longrange views, and take photos of some of the best sunsets anywhere. Any time of year is good. the hiking is mostly moderate, withe some easy and a little strenuos. It's part of the AT and sits on the border of north carolina and tennessee. If you are within an hour or two-go. You will be well rewarded with almost 6000' balds, evergreen forests, and beautiful catawba rhododendron gardens

We decided to visit Roan Mountain State Park for a day visit. Very beautiful park. Everything appears to be updated the playground basketball courts tennis courts are in good shape bathrooms clean. The visitor center was very nice and helpful and had a small museum like room that you could visit. Rocking chairs on the front porch was a nice touch as well. Campground look very nice and updated. We will definitely be back in warmer weather to do some camping. I do recommend the State Park for a day visit or longer.

This is one of those places worth finding. We visited during the heat of summer; we traveled from 90 degree temps in the valley up to mid 70's temps at the meadow on top of of the mountain. The views are incredible, magical, otherwordly. It got a little crowded at the picnic area about mid-day, though, so getting there early (or, perhaps, late) might be best.

So I live in western North Carolina and believe this is one of the best or the best hikes in the Southern Appalachians! It's that awesome and it is the biggest Grass Bald in North America which is a specific type of plant community (very little trees along a ridge = excellent views on a clear day. My family (4) and our friends (5) hiked from Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge. We did the hike on Christmas Day and started hiking in the fog and snow. About two hours in we reached Grassy Ridge at elevation +6,000 and all of a sudden the clouds and fog lifted to reveal amazing views. The snow and ice made for a picture perfect postcard photos. Keep in mind the trail can be a little challenging for small children and the elderly and the weather can impact this as well. I often see people underdressed, it's always colder at this elevation so be prepared and enjoy. I have never gone in the spring and summer and plan to go back but expect that it will also be crowded at this time of year. It's a treasure for sure and wasn't sure if I wanted to post but couldn't keep my favorite hike to myself.

What an amazing place and a must visit for anyone in the area who loves the countryside. An easy hike to the summit which rewards you with fantastic views of North Carolina, Tennesse and Virginia. Its simply breathtaking . Go and see it for yourself.

We camped here for two nights because of positive TripAdvisor reviews. We weren't disappointed. The roads and campsites have recently be paved; the staff was great, and the setting was beautiful. Our site was wooded and backed up to the creek. We had both water and electric hookups.A huge surprise was the free WiFi. This was new and they were still working out some kinks, but there were multiple wireless-access-points located throughout the campground. It worked most of the time.We took a couple of hikes in the campground, and drove to a couple of trailheads near waterfalls. Both waterfalls were pleasant experiences. What a great place to visit!

Roan Mt. State Park is our destination every summer for the last 14yrs and hope to get there this year to make it 15. It is hard to explain but the peace and serenity of the mountains is indescribable for us! The cabins are CLEAN, the people are great and there is always a Ranger on call. Needless to say we love it there!

The cabins do not have tv, phone service, or internet. They DO have folks caring for them that obviously take pride in their jobs. They were clean (comfy mattress and bedding), well stocked kitchen, and firewood provided for the large wood stove. Read the directions on lighting stove and you'll save a lot of time. Firestarters are provided under the kitchen sink. We loved the hiking in the area. In three days we covered the trails from the cabin, Carver's gap, Linnville falls, and various other drives along the blue ridge parkway. Nice museum on location. Gorgeous fall folliage. Enjoyed eating at the Smoky Mountain Bakers 10 min. up the road (closed Sun. and Mon., unfortunately). Ate twice at the River Dog Coffeehouse in Linnville.

Had a great campsite right by the stream. Even the rain could not "dampen" the experience. Wonderful park!

This park offers a wide variety of activities. It has an amphitheater, swimming pool, cabins for rent, playground, fishing, hiking, and camping areas. The drive to the top of the mountain is stunning on a clear day. You do not want to pass on this state park. It is a beautiful place that will offer a lifetime of memories with your family.

Roan Mountain State Park is one of the most well maintained of any state park. It is an undiscovered jewel. Nice camp grounds, cabins, and facilities including tennis courts, swimming pool, basketball courts and playgrounds. Many easy to walk trails and a friendly, helpful staff.Attractions are nearby. Heartily recommend.

I was here for the Roan Mountain Naturalist Rally. The park and facilities are wonderful; well worth a visit! And the rally was exceedingly well planned and included fun and fascinating presentations and nature walks!

Our family has stayed there every year for 25 years. The staff has been there longer than that and they work very hard to make sure you have a great experience. Cabins are 1 and 2 bedrooms with a loft that has two single beds. Full kitchen and large open dining and den areas. Large porch areas with rocking chairs. Choose from a view of the mountains or seclusion in the woods. The best part of this experience is that there are no phones, internet or TV's in the cabins...excellent place to unplug and unwind. Activities include nature walks, hiking, swimming, fishing. Make a point to drive up to the top of Roan Mountain and do the very easy 1/2 mile walk to the top of the Roan...you can see five states from there. I can't come up with one negative thing about our visits
