True local talent with Guru, and a host of others. Great family entertainment on Friday 7:00 until whenever they decide to quit.
This place has been on my bucket list for months. Finally made it out and had a wonderful evening. My husband and I enjoyed soup beans and cornbread for dinner. Then there was great music happening in several rooms of the old school house. One room was just for fiddlers....awesome musicians. Another room had old time gospel the kind of songs and music I enjoyed in our country church as a child. Still another room had a group of folks and the talent was over the top. One guy played about seven musical instruments and still another played spoons. The lady who sang reminded me of Maybelle Carter....outstanding group. Then there was this solo singer in another room who picked and sang all night. Did some great Johnny Cash songs and lots more. Pure Talent is what you will find at Rocky Branch. If you are looking for something unique to do in our area THIS IS IT!
Excellent free entertainment, genuine real talent, not performers trying to be real, beautiful people, set in an old school house, seven or eight different rooms with different music, food can be purchased, starts at 7:00 pm,
I had hoped there would be some real jamming but it was more like practice sessions. Still a good night with awesome people.
We moved to East Tennessee 7 years ago and started going out to Rocky Branch several years ago. It truly is sacred in that, no frills, no fluff, just pure, raw mountain bluegrass from the area residents. Not only are they talented, but it is obvious they love and desire to pass on the rich heritage of this beautiful place. I call Rocky Branch a "nugget".
Rocky Branch is just off hwy 321, headed toward Townsend!! Homegrown musicians find their way there every Friday night for some downhome "pickin and grinning"!! The atmosphere is tremendous!! It offers some very talented homegrown musicians!! Folks move from room to room or might just stay in one. There is some "sing along" from time to time!! Thankfully it is not a "tourist" type location!! Many folks come for a bowl of home cooked soup or beans and cornbread and this helps to fund the cost of building upkeep!! It is will be a good night of entertainment for one and all!! Donations are accepted...
Rocky Branch is a converted elementary school which is supported by donations and folks who love the music of this part of our country. Musicians from all over East Tennessee descend on Walland and Rocky Branch every Friday night. Seven or eight old classrooms have been converted into small entertainment rooms that will accommodate around 50 people each. The audience moves from room to room (or not) to sample the music in each room which ranges from Bluegrass to Old Time Southern Gospel to Country. The quality of the musicianship is very professional although the musicians are not. This area is loaded with talent, many of whom have never gotten the one big break. There is an auditorium and stage for events, the building is available to rent, and the auditorium serves as a dining hall and conversation room for those having a snack or taking a break from the music. There is a donation jar at the entrance, but no set admission charge. Leave what you can and enjoy! It is not tourist oriented, but it should be on the tourist map for Friday nights.
This is an authentic rural community center where people hang out to enjoy music and socailize. The music is great and so are the people. The desserts are tasty too. There is no set admission fee, but they have a donation jar.
It's been awhile since I've been there, but I LOVED stopping in and listening to the music, ALL the music! I'm glad it's still going on - I will start making plans to be there again! BTW, I've brought out-of-towners there, (just the special ones) and they were just blown away! Be very respectful, though - part of the alure is that it isn't a "tourist-y".
On Friday evenings, the residents in the Walland/Townsend area get together at the Rocky Branch Community Center for an evening of home-grown music. Groups of musicians and singers gather in the various rooms for impromptu jam sessions. Visitors move from room to room to sample the different sounds. You will be amazed at the quality of the music. There must be something in the water down there.Admission is whatever donation you want to give. $3 pp is typical. They have a small cafeteria which serves reasonably-priced light dinner food. I didn't sample it, so I can't comment on its quantity & quality. But, it's definitely a great night out just for the music.
