Beautiful hike along the river. While the first mile found lots of fellow hikers, the second mile found us with some pleasant solitude, as most people appear to turn around at mile 1. Flat except for the first hundred yards or so, but still very enjoyable!
If you're looking for a beautiful, unique, easy hike, this is it. Except for the hike up to the tunnels, the trail is flat, wide and well maintained. It is exposed to the sun, so during the hottest months of the year, you'll definitely be hot, but other than that, no complaints at all. It's also connected to the Arkansas River Walk trail, is easily accessible and well marked.
The tunnel drive trail is a flat 2 mile one way trail. Nice views with an easy walk. I wouldn't recommend it in the summer. We did it in October and it was still pretty warm as there is no shade except for the short tunnels. There are benches and picnic tables on the trail which makes it a nice outing for a family. You can wave at the people riding the Royal Gorge train from the trail. They waved back.
Except for the first 1/2 block, there is no elevation on this beautifully maintained trail. Views of the Arkansas River and the rock formations surrounding the trail are fantastic. The trail is actually an old dirt service road and is extremely well maintained and trash cans, benches and picnic tables abound.
This trail is easy to hike. It goes along the gorge a few hundred feet above the Arkansas river and train tracks. It is almost level for all 2 miles (4 miles round trip). If you expect to see the bridge over the gorge - drive to the bridge. This trail doesn't go that far.
We enjoyed strolling this stretch of Tunnel Drive, waving to the many rafters and the excursion train passing below. Scenic rocky landscape with the river below, several benches for sitting and taking in the view. Seems to be a popular running route for locals.
My kids didn't walk on the trail very far. We were excited to go through several tunnels in the first 1/2 mile. It was very scenic, lots of lizards, good exercise, and FREE. We enjoyed it, but only went 1 mile out and back.
Nice walk, little uphill at the beginning. Can be very warm, with little shade. Bring water. Nice view of the Royal Gorge train and river rafters.
The Tunnel Drive hike is an easy walk and was a great way to get a bit of exercise between our morning Royal Gorge train ride and evening helicopter ride. The trail is nicely maintained with benches, trash cans, and picnic tables.
This is a 2 miles walk with very nice view of the Arkansas river. Unfortunatly there is not much information about it, why it was built. There are some impressive tunnels you walk through.
Well worth the walk, not really a hike but fun to check out. Theres actually a picnic table up the walk a ways for those that might like to picnic.
It was nice and relaxing to take the hike along the ark river, we took many photos and enjoyed the view
I love this short hike, its not to difficult. Perfect if you want to get out and see some pretty amazing views and get a little exercise with the family.
Nice walk and great views. The tunnels and cliffs of that area along with the view of the Arkansaw are wonderful. Four miles total.
This is a nice scenic hike. The trail goes through several tunnels, along the train track and above the river. You will experience rafters and if lucky some wild life. Not a difficult hike by any means but do take some water along!
