This is a beautiful 2 mile drive. Absolutely hated that there weren't any guard rails and freaked out the whole time but it is what it is. Stunning views, a few places to turn off for photos. The only negative is that there are joggers and pedestrians al over the place on steep inclines and one wrong move and your car could flip off the side of the ledge or the pedestrian could just topple off. I'd do it again, never!
Skyline offers a beautiful view of Canon City. Wonderful for morning runs or for an evening hangout. I would not recommend if one is afraid of heights, but other than that it is a must do if you are visiting the area.
Skyline drive is well worth the venture. Good free fun and nice views of the Canon City to be had. I don't think it compares to Trail Ridge road in Rocky Mountain National park, but if you are in this part of the state, make sure to check it out!
WOW the views of the town was amazing I normally do not do heights but our trip on Skyline Drive was wonderful.
Just ignore the review about the guide and getting hurt. This is a one lane road that you drive yourself. If you get hurt it's because you didn't tend to your own safety or walked off the road and stumbled over a rock. DO NOT drive this road if you are in a hurry. There are a couple of pulll over points so you can park and walk a little but that's it. No parking "lots" and no trails until to get to the bottom. I've lived here for 25 years and have taken all my visitors on Skyline Drive. Many want to do it every time them come visit. Great value for your money - because it's free.
Skyline drive goes along the ridge of the mountains to the West of Canon City. First, it is like being on a roller coaster, it goes up and down. Second, don't go up if it is windy or icy. While they usually lock the gates under these conditions, the road is narrow, there are steep dropoffs and there are few guardrails. They recommend nothing longer that a 20 foot vehicle and it is one way. However, I recommend it for the views from the top. You have great views of the Wet Mountains and the Sangres behind them. You also will get to see the town from above. Not bad for a quick, free drive.
Guide did not attend to safety. I got hurt. The guide was on his last day of work and leaving to go back to school, and did not care about our safety.
OK, we have a lot of mountain roads in Colorado that will have you looking over an edge with a several hundred, or more, foot drop off where you would normally expect a shoulder, but at point along Skyline drive you have this on both sides of the road. Enjoy the view in the distance and the narrow ground below you falls away from your view, almost giving you the feeling of flying. Indicate 4/14 for my visit date, but I've done Skyline Drive more times than I can count and never fail to take it when I'm passing through.
Not a ride for someone who has a fear of heights, took my nephew and family one it. Didn't known wife, had a pr.oblem with heights, not good.
This was an awesome 4 mile drive where you can actually see the footprints of Dinosaurs...but you had to keep your eyes on the road as well :-) the potential for rolling off a 400 foot cliff was always there ...thank God it was a one way road !!!
We have driven this a couple of times and still enjoy it. The views are fantastic. It think it may be closed this time of year because we wanted to take the grand kids along it before going on the Santa Express and the gate was closed.
One way drive along the ridge back on the edge of town. View dinasour the tracks. Drive is bike and pedestrian friendly.
I hike up here when I come to town and it's simply amazing! Beautiful view, not to crowded, and nice to get away from everyday stress and just relax.
Skyline drive, built by inmate labor from the Territorial Correctional Facility, runs along a ridge line with Canon City on one side and Hwy 50 on the other. Entrance is on the right off Hwy 50 after leaving the town. The single-lane road is now paved and safe enough, but not if heights bother you. Still, you get some great views and it's free. Note that the road is one-way and there's no turning around. It ends by taking you down the back of the ridge into Canon City.
Always a thrill to do Skyline Drive! Check out the Fossils in the wall. And it's Free! Great way to get an overall view of the valley. It's kinda scary but paved and safe.Visited November 2014
