My 22 month old visited with her grandparents and cried when it was time to go. I think this was the highlight of her trip!
Not much to say about this place. I've been twice really just went in to get out of the elements. Only takes about 10 minutes to get a good look around and really there's not a whole lot to look at. The forming of the mines were interesting but I couldn't really get any info from the staff. I learned more from Wikipedia.
We were up in Crested Butte for a quiet weekend and I decided to try out this little museum. Boy am I glad that I did. It's just great, there are so many immersive and creative activities for children. My kids are 7 year old twins and a 4 year old and we were happy at the museum for nearly 3 hours, I would highly recommend!
We are with a 5 & 7 year old who have been to places like this in locations across the globe, so they have caviar tastes : ). I expected to burn an hour, maybe 2, but 4 hours later, we had to haul them out of there. It's only 6 bucks and they encourage interaction with your kids. We were the only people in the place and we had such a fun time with them. The dig pit was a huge hit as was the art section with the kinetic sand. There's a grocery and a toddler section as well. The view out to the mountain was great as well. It's small, but very well designed. Some people came in after us and didn't want to pay to "just stand around and watch," so they left their kids there. Sad - we had a really great time playing with them. And the lady at the front desk was super nice.
This place is a haven for parents after being coped up in a hotel room with a child! Especially after a long day of skiing when you are tired and your little one is full of energy. There is a ton to do! They have a pizza kitchen, grocery store, digging pit, baby area, even a science area for big kids.Amazingly it is only $6 a child/adult. And you can come back anytime during the day for that price. It is great if you want to trade off skiing/childcare with your spouse.
My 7 yr old son decided after 2 days of ski school, he didn't want to ski. I took him to the Trailhead to kill some time on the mountain. The street level of the museum is typical, geared for toddler to 5 year olds. Downstairs, had activities more geared for kids over 5. After an hour, we were done with nothing left to explore. The Trailhead did offer a child care program where the kids created something artsy in an art room but those were not available to regular visitors.
We had time to kill before our afternoon flight out of Gunnison, so we stopped by the museum with our 4 children. They absolutely loved it! What a wonderful, hands on place for children. And at $6/child, it is indeed a bargain. Check out their camps too.
If you've got kids from 2yrs-8yrs and are in the Crested Butte area, you've got to stop by the Trailhead Museum. There are two floors of interactive exhibits to explore, but arts and the new musical instruments outside. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
$6 per child gets you in all day- come and go as you please- with 2 floors of activities. It's on the small side, but every square inch is accounted for with lots of fun and little ones in mind. My kids loved the art section. They painted and did crafts most of the time, then played downstairs building with blocks and doing science experiments with magnets. It was definitely worth going!
My wife and 2 year old went to the museum while I went fishing. My wife said my 2 year old had a blast. They had paints, music, blocks, etc. So, even thought it is a " museum", it is really more of a play land for kids. It right in the heart of CB mountain near the lifts.
The Trailhead Children's Museum is worth a visit. It is an atmosphere of friendliness and fun. A huge art bar with daily specials is a hit with the little ones. Come in and plan to play and explore the arts & sciences, on a small scale, with your kids!
This is a children's museum in Crested Butte, CO. If you are going to Crested Butte and you have kids up to about age 8, I would go check it out. The museum is actually located at the base of the ski area in Mt. Crested Butte. Really great hands-on art and science stuff for the kids, some fun exhibits, super staff, and a really good feel. I thought we would be there for an hour max, and the kids didn't want to leave even after over two hours! Work it into your schedule. It was alot of fun. Thank you Trailhead! Every town should have something like this.
