The ability to access Old Fall River Road after the Flood of 2013 was finally resolved just in time for our visit the last week of October with a new culvert at the Alluvial Fan and paving to the west parking area which is the winter closure point. We were able to hike the 1 mile to the Old Fall River gate and continued 4 miles up the road before turning around. This is quite a different experience from driving Old Fall River Road and way less harrowing - you can spend as much time as you want at the Chasm Falls, absorb the environment around you and soak in the views without having to worry about driving off the edge. We hit snow along the way which only added to the beauty. If you are at RMNP in the off season, check with rangers to see if this road has been converted to "trail status" so you can experience this hike for yourself.

I was on Old Fall River Road prior to 2013 and really enjoyed the drive, another great way to see RMNP some water falls and cascades to stop at watch of course lots of wildlife and great views

For the majority of the drive, this is a one-way dirt/gravel road that will give you a different view of the park than you get from traversing on Trail Ridge Road. In my experience, there is less traffic on this road and you'll see less people. Which means you'll also see more wildlife. Sometimes the view is blocked by trees, but when you get to look back into the valley, the view is amazing. I encountered elk, deer, moose, and marmots at close range. The road is not in any way harrowing or scary, though it is a single lane with no guard rail.

Having driven this gravel single lane road before, I was disappointed this year due it's closing due to flood damage in 2013. The alluvial fan blocked the road and even paved roads were washed out. Many houses were lost on highway 34 canyon but it's open now.

Old Fall River Road is a beautifully scenic dirt road (one-way up). Unfortunately, it is closed until further notice, as it sustained major wash-out damage with the Sept 2013 flood.

I like that this was the first road up and over, cant imagine going up in an old 32 ford. Drive slow and enjoy the views, all gravel, but its pretty easy for cars.

We love this drive. Unfortunately it was closed due to the 2013 flood. I was really looking forward to it. This is a 11 mile gravel, one-way uphill road punctuated by switchbacks. If you get the chance, you should do this at least one. I cannot wait for it to open again.

It was closed for all 2014. Hopefully, restoration of this shelf/cliff, one way drive will be done in 2015, for the 100th Anniversary of Rocky Mountain National Park. If not open by July 2015, it may be a longer time to rebuild.

I really enjoyed this road and drove it twice in the week that I was there. It's a dirt road that goes through a part of RMNP. It has beautiful views, stops that you can walk to a few waterfalls, scary drop offs, hiking trails and ends up at the Alpine Visitor Center on top. Just remember to go earlier in the morning otherwise you will be in a line of cars and eating their dust. Due to flooding in fall of 2013, it is closed this year 2014 and I'm not sure if it will be open or not in 2015. I had been looking forward to driving it this year (2014)

Old Fall River Road is a wonderful adventure to the summit. A one way dirt road and lots of scenery. There are several places to pull off road, walk around and admire the scenery.

It is not for those who have a fear of heights.while it is quite safe and secure, sometimes the road does not seem to have room for the car to get thru then on one stretch clouds covered the road and it was really scary.

This was one of our favorite attractions in the park in our July 2008 visit. Now, however, it is completely closed to vehicle traffic and park staff estimate that it will be at least 2 years before it is reopened due to extensive damage in multiple areas as a result of the September 2013 flood. At present you can walk it but you need to be in pretty good shape to do that. We look forward to driving this once again if it is ever reopened.

Stunning view along the road with nice walking trails on the top. Makes you literally short of breath, both from the altitude and the view.

Although the road is closed park at the entrance and walk back to the river. Its beautiful. Many visitors were walking up the side's of the river into the valley. Beautiful scenes to photograph.

This road is one way so you cannot turn around. There are a few "small" places to pull off. This is a dirt road, with steep edges so you will want to go slow. If your afraid of heights this might not be the road for you. Happy Travels!
