This was my first time visiting a vineyard or doing a wine tour/tasting. The host we had was the son who also runs the vineyard and had so much knowledge. It was a beautiful day and the vineyard overlooks the mountains which was beautiful. He showed us every step of the process and was able to answer any questions. Not a wine buff or anything but it was interesting and fun. Then we also did the tasting and cheese platter after the tour, the cheese was great and there was a homemade chocolate that was amazing! Cute place in the country!
Our group of five friends visited Altamont Vineyard on a snowy Saturday afternoon in December. We arrived at 4:00pm, an hour before closing, and had the tasting room to ourselves. We were served by a friendly and knowledgable young lady who seemed genuinely happy to have our company. For $5 we did 5 tastings with very generous pours. We tried 1 white, 1 rosé, and 3 reds. The "Redemption Red" is by far their most accessible wine. Definitely try the Leon Millot, which had a unique "Christmas Tree" smell to it! We got the special treatment with a visit from the vineyard's big red dog, and a complimentary plate of dill havarti cheese, and then later a plate of amazing pickled cabbage presented by the master winemaker himself. We had a wonderful experience, and can't wait to go back in the nicer weather to enjoy the outdoor patio.
Went to Altamont for a Groupon Deal. Such an unexpected experience. Upscale, but not snotty.Fun and upbeat, yet relaxing. Great wines...knowledgeable, friendly, staff. Wonderful fruits and homemade chocolate! We will be back!
Since we were driving from Boston to Saratoga Springs NY, I looked for interesting places to visit along the way. I came upon the Altamont Winery, and although it felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere, the winery turned out to be a great little place. To our surprise, the café tables were filled with sophisticated young people! For $8, one may taste 5 wines. The whites were not for me, but the pinot noir was a winner, as was one red, not available for tasting, called Resurrection. We purchased the Resurrection for $22 and found it to be full bodied and smooth. Also available for purchase was a snack plate for 2 at $12. It included a smoked white cheddar (yum!), a sage cheese (very nice), and a chive cheese (not my type) as well as Carr's crackers, a sliced plum, and homemade chocolate dusted with ground nuts (OUTSTANDING), but none of these could be purchased in any quantity to take home. However, the owner said that a restaurant is in the planning stages. I hope it works out, because that smoked white cheddar and the chocolate as well as the Resurrection wine and the pinot noir were worth going back for!
Spend an afternoon at this lovely little venue in the hills outside the Village of Altamont (Town of Guilderland, New York). You may stroll through the vineyards, and return to the little store and tasting room. For just five dollars, you will taste six varieties, and have the opportunity to buy your favorites by the bottle. Other wine-related gift items are also available in the charming shop. Very competent, knowledgeable and friendly owners and staff attend to your needs. Best to call ahead for hours of opening and to learn of any special weekend events going on. Highly recommended.
We like to visit local wineries. Good variety of wines. Nice to have a local place to buy wine when having company over.
The two owners were a lot of fun to chat with. So glad we decided to check this place out. You get to keep the glass of the wine tasting. Well definitely be back during our next visit and make it a tradition to visit.
Glad to have found this place. Beautiful natural surroundings including pond & great view of vineyard. Tasting room is nicely decorated. Tasting is a great deal at $5, including rosemary infused oil and local cheddar, as well as 6 wines each with a generous pour! Staff friendly, including the resident pooch. Picnic area seemed very nice, although we hadn't brought a picnic. Highly recommend.
My wife and I stumbled upon this winery while visiting family in the area. It's a little off the beaten path and It does not look like much as you drive up to the main building. However, upon entering we were surprised to find a new/modern tasting room and a warm welcome from the staff. The $5 cost to taste 6 wines (you also get to keep the glass) is a bargain. The wine is good and in general costs $12-$20 per bottle. We picked up two bottles and will stop again the next time we are in the area.
My husband and I went last weekend 7/1/12. There are six very different wines to taste. Really nice and informative staff. Pack a picnic they have a lovely picnic area.
It is great place to go for a wine tasting. They are always very friendly and helpful. The wine is delicious for a local winery and the area is beautiful. Even their dog is friendly and nice! They have a few nice items for sale in the shop as well. The wine makes a great gift also.
