Try to visit in the winter, so many cool things that take shape in the off season. The ice volcano is amazing, the falls are even better.
I love it here! I have been to the park in the summer, Fall and Winter. It is a great place to visit during all seasons. So much to do. In the summer you can visit the museums, the falls, take in the breath taking views, hiking, camp, stay in a cabin and so much more. In the winter they have free snow tubing, snow mobile trails, cross country skiing trails, snow shoe trails, beautiful views and you can check out the ice cone at the Glen Iris Inn. Each time I go I take lots of pictures. You may even see lots of wildlife. I would highly recommend coming to the park.
I've visited Letchworth a few times in the past few years. I most recently went this weekend with my boyfriend and saw the ice volcano. Unreal! What was even more amazing was the frozen waterfall right behind Glen Iris Inn. So gorgeous. A wonderful day trip and highly recommended. If you have time, do a small hike, snowshoes may be needed.
I visited Letchworth State Park in Castile, NY. Letchworth is a huge park that includes 14,350 acres along the Genesee River. I went with my husband, son and his fiance to visit this beautiful state park. My son and his fiance live in Syracuse so we left from their home. It is approximately 1.5 hours west of Syracuse NY and slightly before you arrive in Rochester. Thus, it is very deep upstate NY. If you are vacationing in NY or going up for a college visit or to see the Niagara Falls, it is worth a stop at this beautiful park. Be aware that this park is so large that the cell phone service stops after 20 minutes of driving and I have Verizon! This park is full of places to have many different types of activities. When we visited in July 2014 there was an exhibit going on and we stopped to view the exhibit. We then went all the way to the waterfall area (it took more than 30 minutes to get there) to see the various waterfalls. There is a very nice trail that lets you view the waterfalls very well although you cannot do it from one stop. We had to move our car a few times to view all the falls. We took many beautiful photos. Depending on your energy level, you can climb to the level of the highest waterfall. We decided to forgo that activity as it was very hot the day we visited and our son had already done it and said it was not worth the energy. Just climbing to some of the waterfall views was exhausting as the trail is often on an incline, some of which was steep. There is fencing and I'm afraid of heights and I was able to manage to get great photos so you can also. There were picnic tables available by the highest waterfall and we had a lovely lunch under a shady tree. There were also bbq pits and some families cooked their food. It felt nice to eat and relax and watch other families toss balls and have fun with their families. I highly recommend traveling to this park as you get good exercise, wonderful views and place to eat. The young familites also appeared to be having a lot of fun. You must bring your own supplies (food and activities) but these families appeared to know this fact. Please note that there did not appear to be any place to purchase food by the waterfalls. The park did provide rest rooms that were fairly clean at various locations. I suggest checking for NYS activities at this park before you go to this park as you should try to coordinate your visit with an interesting exhibit that you enjoy. Please also note that I selected family (teens) because my actual group was not available. My son and his fiance are 26 yo and no longer living with us. However, there were families with children of various ages so this is appropriate for this type of group. There is also a visitor center that will give you a map that could be helpful since this park is so large. I provided the phone # for the visitor center.
My friend and I visited Letchworth State Park in August 2014. We did a two day one night stay and enjoyed our trip immensely. There are several beautiful waterfalls and the whole park is exceptionally clean and picturesque. We even got to see a few deer while we were there. We went to the park to do some photography and were certainly not disappointed. I'm sure it must be stunning in the Fall and would love to return at that time of the year. We stayed one night at the Park-Lake Motel. It was a small older motel but clean and very close to the park. Nothing fancy but adequate for what we needed and the price was right. We also visited the surrounding little towns and ate at the Chicken and Pizza dinner at the Drive-In. I will certainly return to Letchworth State Park for more photography opportunities in the future. : )
The frozen falls (while only accessible by walking through about 10 inches of snow) were absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend if you are anywhere near Letchworth that you take advantage of its natural magnificence every season!
It was beautiful with all the snow, but they only plow some of it and you have to have snow shoes to get to see any of the falls in the winter months.
Amazing views, huge waterfalls, lots of great hiking trails, and cabins. We were blown away at how beautiful it was here. We spent two days hiking and exploring and still didnt cover a fraction of the park, We hike alot and this was a place to remember! HIGHLY recommend!
Absolutely beautiful. I lived in that area years ago and it seems even more beautiful now. The falls and gorges are lovely and many paths to walk about. It is a mini Grand Canyon. Great photo opportunities abound. The winter time is great as well.
They call it the Grand Canyon of the East it's a must we found it very interesting spent the hole day there.
Great place to visit. It isn't far from Buffalo or Rochester and is fairly convenient when traveling on US 86 or 390 in NY.Waterfalls are great by themselves but when adding in the gorge, dam, and the leaves it makes for a great atmosphere. Would advise to be cautious with children. You can get right up close to the ledge with 300ft drops.
Beautiful, accessible, available all year, hidden areas to explore, something for every season and every one. Hint try it in winter
My family and I visited Letchworth State Park a few years ago and absolutely loved it. We went the beginning of September 2012. The trails are very easy to walk and well groomed. There are a lot of different sites to visit within the park with great learning opportunities for yourself and your family.
My Fiance and I have visited Letchworth in each season, and have been pleasantly surprised everytime. The park is amazing in each season, and we have enjoyed even the winter there. Our pictures are beautiful from every view.We have taken our dog, and the hiking has tons of options and different trails. This location is a must see and visit on a romantic getaway or vacation with the children.
