The Great Sacandaga Lake is a beautifully pristine (clean) lake as there is fresh water feeding it from the Adirondack foothills surrounding it and water is released periodically from the Dam... Terrific trails to hike in summer and snowshoe or snowmobile in winter. For more sights and activity there is Lake George and Saratoga Springs nearby. You will get more than your money's worth staying around the Lake.
We had a wonderful time visiting family on Great Sacandaga Lake. Beautiful walks around the lake and lots of places to explore on the boat. Since we are from Florida, the water in July and first week of August was still a little cold for us. The granddaughters didn't mind the cold water and loved playing on the shore, throwing rocks, kayaking, tubing and jumping off the dock. Great area for a family vacation in the middle of some beautiful nature and interesting small towns. We were very surprised by how big the lake was. We found a really interesting book about the history of the area with how and why the lake was made. Looking forward to more family vacations on the Great Sacandaga Lake.
We stayed at the Northhampton Campground with one RV, 3 tents, 4 kids, 6 adults, and 2 dogs. They gave us a sweet camping spot on the water, so the kids could ride their bikes on the pine-needle covered trails, go fishing whenever they wanted because we were 75 feet from the lake, and we all hit the swimming beach a few times a day. The little camp store has the nicest people working there who provided morning codffee at 6 am and free air for our bicycle tires. The prices were very reasonanble. I would recommend this as a fun family vacation spot!
I spend the majority of my summers on this lake. My parents bought property (a camp) in the 70's and I am fortunate that they have given it to me. It is a sanity recharger!! You will find yourself not wanting to leave!
The last time I came by the Great Sacandaga Lake, it was frozen solid with the ice of winter. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to spend some time around the lake in the warmth of summer, and I had a blast. The lake is in full summer mode, with a festival in Waterfront Park and the sounds of the season in the air. Lots of canoes and small boats were in the water, as there are more than their share of boat launches for recreational purposes. I've never fished this lake, but a lot of folks had their poles out and their lines in the water, so I can only assume that the lake is well stocked as well. Lots of hotels and lodges dot the shores of this gem, and the area offers more than its share of attractions. It's a beautiful area, and I highly recommend it as a summer destination, either for the day or longer. You will enjoy it!
The Great Sacandaga Lake and environs is a great place for boating, swimming, hiking, and enjoying small town life as it should be enjoyed. The village of Northville has all the charm you will ever want from a small Village. It's people are friendly and helpful. The village and surrounding area has some great places to enjoy such as the Inn at the Bridge, The Timeless Tavern, the Sport Island Pub, Java John's , Lanzi's on the Lake, the I Go Inn as and many more.A drive or boat around the lake is spectacular indeed. In addition, there is an abundance of artists in the area some of whose works are nationally and internationally known. Give it a try. You won't regret it.
Such an easy drive from NYC to a fabulous getaway in fresh air on a beautiful lake in all seasons. Boating and just lounging on the beach (public beach but also Sport Island Pub & The Inn At The Bridge offer lakeside with just a purchase of a drink or whatever you would like from their menu) is wonderful there, in an area with such welcoming locals. But, we also enjoy it in the winter on our snowmobiles and the easy drive to Lapland for cross country skiing, and Gore for downhill. Stunning lake surrounded by beautiful mountains, and a sea of color in autumn. I love their "Ring Of Fire" they do Labour Day, where all the homes/Inns/places on the lake ignite a large bonfire and have a party and you can see them all surrounding the lake in the evening.
If you have never visited the Great Sacandaga Lake, located in the area in and around Northville, NY, don't pass up the opportunity, even in the middle of winter. I was in Northville yesterday for a business meeting, and was astounded by the beauty of the place. The entire lake was frozen over, (it was below zero the entire day yesterday), and the lake presented a gorgeous representative view of the Adirondacks in winter. The best view appeared to be driving over the bridge that connects the town of Northville with Route 30 to the west. It was obvious that cars had driven out onto the lake, (don't try this without reassurance from a competent authority on local ice conditions), and many people were out on the ice doing ice fishing. This would be a great place to spend the weekend, dropping a line through the hole in the ice and pulling up smelt, and other Adirondack fish. This is a great place to visit in both summer and winter, but please remember, safety comes first!
