Although Mount Defiance is a path leading up to a great view of Fort Ticonderoga and the lake, it's much more. It's the history, put yourself up there in the 1700's with Indian tribes below and massive sailing ships on the lake firing cannon. Today it's a paved road with a great view, but when you have the history and a bit of imagination I do think this becomes a wonderful experience.

Mt. Defiance is special for many reasons. It is rich in history, has great views and more special to me because my relative Tony Morette was the keeper. Also cool to see NY on one side and Vermont on the Other. It really puts your eyes in the perspective of the soldiers who had to climb that mountain to win a war.

Beautiful views. Good to visit after visiting the fort so you know more of its history. the road up there is pretty rough!

I want you all to know, this is a small peak, with a paved road leading to it, a dirt parking lot, and a ramada. It has a very nice view, looking over Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga. It isn't, that this is a poor quality thing to do. There just is nothing there, and I do not want you to expect to much. If I was to rate it in terms of the quality of the overlook than it would be excellent. My rating should not deter you from driving up the mountain to take a look, you will love it. However, there is nothing else there when you arrive, so keep that in mind. This was not always the case with Mount Defiance. In its heyday it had a nice two story building with a great gift shop, it had a wooden fence that surrounded the top of the mountain which gave you the colonial feel. I can't remember if they sold food back in the old days. However as time passed, Fort Ticonderoga purchased it from the previous owner and the whole thing was simplified on top.It is a great place to have a pick-nick lunch, of course bring your own food and drinks because there is absolutely nothing there to purchase. It is quiet and peaceful and a great place to think about what it was like when the British were shooting their cannon down onto Fort Ticonderoga. The Ramada use to have a number of signs that explained some really nice facts about the Fort and Lake Champlain, they were taken down and recently two of many were put back up again.Perhaps someone at the Fort can explain why Mount Defiance deserves such little attention. Now a days, it will require a ticket from Fort Ticonderoga to get through the automatic gates with your car. Or you could park at the bottom and take about a 30 minute stroll to the top. You could actually walk in some of the same footsteps of those soldiers who dragged huge cannons to the top. Mount Defiance, the most wonderful attraction that isn't and longer. Thanks

Mt. Defiance is a historical site.It is a road up a mountain that overlooks Ft. Ticonderoga & Lake Champlain. It is also a great place for cellphone reception. You can drive or walk up this steep paved incline. At the top is an open pavilion with a fabulous view. There are tables on which one may sit and have a meal.It is windy. But you are out of the sun.If you want to drive up you should have a ticket from Ft. Ticonderoga. But you can park & walk up.Worth the climb.
