Although there is never a bad time to visit Lake Placid Olympic locations, Winter is best. After all, it was the sight of the Winter Olympics. A competition day at the Jumping Complex is incredible! Avid fans, loyal family members and visitors alike, all join the cheering and angst of a very long jump. Arrive early enough to see the whole complex before competition begins and you will have a greater appreciation for the guts it takes to engage in this sport. $11 entry fee goes up to $16 on competition days (unless you purchase the "Passport" which is highly recommended for discounts at multiple Olympic locations). There is a relatively short downhill walk from the parking lot to the base of the jumps which could be difficult if there is a handicapping issue. Here there is a gift shop, snack bar and you can take the chairlift halfway up, to the launch location of the jumps. Then go up the 120' elevator to the start of the jump. Impressive panoramic views and a harrowing competitors perspective await you from an enclosed and very safe viewing area. During competitions it's possible to see the action from multiple locations - top, middle and bottom. In Winter, be sure to dress for a day in the snow. You can go inside to warm up, but it's not the same as being in the crowd. If you are looking for adventure of your own, there is snow tubing near the parking area, for an additional fee.
We happened upon the Jumping Complex after a competition weekend and we were SO lucky. They were actually practicing aerials and it brought a whole new level of appreciation to the sport. My family and I just oooh and ahhed and it was a highlight of our week in LP. We never went up the lift because my kids were too chicken, but to see it in person was just amazing. I would love to go back and visit during a ski jump or aerials competition.
For $11 a ticket, it's an excellent choice. You take the chair lift to the bottom of the ski jump towers. Then the elevator up the 120 meter jump. You can climb a bit higher. The wind is crazy at the top. You can watch jumpers in training. There also is aerial ski jumpers. It was fun until one crashed and burned. The shop/snack bar is great for a warm treat. The view is great!
Take the elevator up, up, up to the 120 meter tower. Enjoy the indoor observation area and the screened in exterior observation area. It looks impressive on television--wait until you see it in person. Before you pay, ask what time jumpers will be there for an added treat. If you're scared of heights--you can still enjoy this.
we've been here twice; it is 100% better when skiers are practicing their jumps, but for about $10 you can ride a ski lift and take the elevators to the top of the jumps where you can see for miles and miles.
If your in Lake Placid, this is a MUST visit destination for people of all ages. Amazing to get a literal birds eye view of how insane ski jumpers are! Its an incredible experience just to stand there!
The jumps were amazing and the band that played - Annie In the Water was great! They kept the crowd warm with their music and enthusiasm. We forgot that it was well below zero!
closed on Monday, could not even get close to have a look, would have been nice to get a peak up close
We were fortunate to visit on a clear day and get a great view from the top. My son's friend had never been to Lake Placid before, so we stopped here first to give him an overview of the area. He was impressed not only by view, but by the history represented here. We also got to watch some young ski jumpers.
A fabulous view from the top of the ski jump, it's easy to imagine the snow covered landscape, the electric atmosphere, the roar of the crowd as the athletes prepare to jumps for glory!!!! Haha, it's a great experience. Also enjoyed the chair lift up among the stunning views. We were lucky to watch the athletes practicing their jumps complete with snow suits and skis into the pool...fascinating. Loved it.
Its a nice place to watch ski jumpers. If there is no snow don't worry they wet the jump and the skiers land on wet grass. The view from the top is worth the trip.
We were there during a snowstorm, so we were basically the only people at the ski jump site when we were there. It's a great view from the top, and we had fun hanging out at the finishers' podium!
When you arrive at the gate with your car , the guys says it is 7$ to get in. The guy is not friendly and I almost wanted to turn around. Going through the gate , you go to a lower parking lot where there was 1 car only. I go through the souvenir shop which looks awful by the way and walk to the chair lift for the ski jumping platforms. when I get there , the guy says I need another ticket to go up. So basically , you pay 7$ to see a gift shop , nothing else. You have to pay an additional $4 per person to go up. So 11$ to go up a small chair lift to get to the top (where there is nothing to see besides the view)
There's NOTHING like watching people ski off a cliff! You can sit inside and get coffee at the bottom, or go up the lift and elevator and watch from the top. Either way, don't miss it!
Yup, the complex is both inspiring and intimidating. Get over your fear of heights and take the tour...you can, in fact, imagine the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
