Prong Pond is one of the best kept "secrets" of the Moosehead region. It is a smaller, semi-isolated pond that lends itself to a relaxing day (well, half-day) of paddling and wildlife watching. If you show up early enough, there is a very good chance you will see moose in the marshes of its various inlets and if you arrive later in the day, you will be serenaded by the sounds of loons and likely see beaver as well. The entire pond can be paddled in half a day or you can relax, pack a lunch and explore one of several islands or small beaches (often difficult to find but once you do, are worth a short exploration) of the pond. The surface is contained and thus less affected by wind and will provide less-experienced paddlers with a nice place to get comfortable in a canoe or kayak. Canoe rental is also available from several outfitters in Greenville with the canoes kept pond-side at the launch for ease of transport. A quick trip into town to pay a very reasonable fee and pick up the keys, paddles, and vests is all that is needed before going out on the water.Well worth a half-day or even full day if you are in the area.
We rented canoes for the afternoon on Prong Pond and it was utterly beautiful! It was so peaceful and unspoilt, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and loved seeing the Loons, Osprey and Bald Eagles.
We fished Prong Pond from our tandem kayak. Putting the boat in and taking it out was very easy. The fishing was slow but we did haul in a 5 pound smallmouth bass. The pond is hard to paddle on windy days.
Nice place to go for a paddle. Place for parking and easy unloading with small ramp of put in. Quiet place, not much traffic. Warm water fishing pond, but was not there for fishing. Paddled around the shoreline and explored few islands. Nice to place to paddle if it is windy in a nice setting. Actual visit was prior to 2013 but hasn't changed much. Drove there last year to check out and still the same. Hidden geocache on one of the islands. Check out geocaching.com
Great small pond surrounded with beauty. Nice place for a quiet canoe paddle and picnic lunch. We played "tag" with two loons with our canoe, enjoyed by us and the loons!
What a great little pond to launch a kayak or a canoe. Very secluded and quiet. We got to see several Loons..just beautiful. Lovely to listen to also.
I tried fishing from my kayak with no success. The kayaking was easy and the surroundings are so beautiful. It is another wonderful Maine pond with no entry cost and easy access.
Stayed on the lake in October and this review is more from a photography perspective since we did not fish the lake. It’s bigger than any pond I grew up around so I call it a lake. Beautiful colors in the fall, great sunrises, ducks, beaver, and rumored moose. Was usually foggy in the morning I didn’t see any other people on the water during the 4 days we were there.
I have caught 4 fish species, seen multiple duck species, moose, deer, otters, beavers, and eagles in this secluded pond. Very peaceful and serene. love it
fabulous fishing ... we did catch and release but smallies and chubs up to 4 to 5 lbs plus .... incredible
Prong is easy to access from Greenville and has some beautiful scenery and wildlife. Although the paddle back can be challenging with the seemingly everpresent wind, it's worth exploring the "prongs" for great views of Elephant Mt. and surrounding peaks. We've seen otters, eagles and, of course, loons here.
I loved kayaking the pond with no one else but the loons
