Not a lot of waves. A nice place to paddle board. There are not many waves here so it is perfect for little ones. There are also quite a few hermit crabs for study. Many folks who seek a quieter and calmer beach locale this is the place for you.
This whole area is so beautiful...walk along the beach any time of the year and enjoy wonderful aroma of the ocean....this beach is great for families with little ones as it is not a huge beach. Boat ramp and kayak rentals available here. Abuts wildlife refuge...in the eve deer roam all over this area. Just a wonderfully scenic spot on Aquidneck Island.
At the end of Third Beach Road is Third Beach! It is a local beach where families traditionally take the little ones every year..but it is not just for kids, It is calm clean and a local beach that is paled by First and Second Beach but none the less a great spot. You can wind sale and boat launch there also.
Third Beach is so great on the Sacconett Riverfaces North East and is a calm place on a summers day to sit in a quiet setting and watch the birds fly boats sail and the swimmers swimno wind no crowd except on the weekends.
Haven't visited this in the summer but appears there is a boat launch and could also be used to launch kayaks. We spotted a snowy owl after a tip from a local we met on the Sachuest Wildlife Refuge trail.
I love this quiet beach tucked away among the wetlands, especially for off-season reflective walks with my dog. The combination of the rich birdlife of the marsh sanctuary, the pretty scene of anchored boats, and the variety of shells for beachcombing make this a special place.
Agree with many of the other posters. This is the best beach we have found for small children in Newport. We are just back from our 3rd summer vacation and the beach seemed especially clean this year. I am not sure if they combed it every night or if we were just lucky but it was spotless. Kids are able to play in very clam water and never have a problem sitting close enough to keep an eye on them while still relaxing a bit. We've gone on the weekend in the past and it can get a bit crowded but on this trip we were there Monday, Tuesday, Friday and it was very was wide open.Dells lemonade and snacks from lunchtime on. Portable toilets served their purpose.Would be great if they one day built a more permanent facility at this beach.
Clean white sand, inner beach so little surf, gentle slope into the water, so great for families with small kids or older folks who have to be a little careful. There is a small shop that sells snack lunches, drinks etc and a public toilet at one end. I think the beach is cleaned each morning and there are lifeguards.
no need to go to third when there are so many better spots. It was dirty and desolate in a bad way. kokokokokokokokokokokokokokokokokokokok
We went to the harbor-side of Third Beach (where the boats are moored). The surf was 100% flat and it was very crowded, especially given the 4th of July weekend. We went early, but the parking lot on the other side of Third Beach (which has surf and is much larger) was full. I would recommend leaving extra early to make sure you get on the surf-side of Third Beach
This is also a wonderful beach ... wild water walks and lots of fun for families. Pack a picnic or take many $1s to grab a bite or two. Something about third beach that takes away one's breath. I watched a hurricane once at this beach. Amazing - until we had to evacuate!
This beach has small waves and great for younger kids. Also you can bring or rent kayak or SUP and paddle into Sakonnet River from here.
Nice beach, beautiful surroundings. The beaches of South County, including those in Newport and Middletown are all special.
This was one of the most quiet and beautiful beaches I have seen while in Rhode Island. The waters are very calm--altho still a bit cold but its one of the places I would recommend if your not really into the crowds. When we arrived, there were about three people there. It was really amazing. There's also a nice collection of seashells.
We were here in October so I really don't know what it's like during the summer. There was only our family plus two other families that came and went during our several hour stay. Our young daughter wanted to dig for buried treasure, since she had read that Rhode Island has much undiscovered treasure from pirate ships of many years ago. She did not find any buried treasure, but we did find some of the best sea shells we've seen at any beach.
