Nature's beauty... with no make-up. Dunes, pond and much wildlife. Nice kyack...paddle board and/or nature walk area
Sachem Pond is a lovely large pond located at the North Point on Block Island. It is part of the wildlife bird refuge managed by U.S. fish and Wildlife. The pond is brackish, meaning it was fresh water but that the ocean has washed over into it; it doesn't change it's beauty, just it's salt content! In summer Littlefield Bee Farm often has a stand here selling their local honey. Sometimes there is a hot dog cart. When the pond freezes in winter the locals often ice skate and ice boat on it.There are no facilities, so plan accordingly (the last public restrooms are 3 miles south at the Town Beach house). From Sachem Pond you can see the North Lighthouse which is a short, about 1/4 mile, walk down the beach.
There's a little beach just behind the parking lot, and the water is a lot warmer than the ocean. Once you get off the sand it's a bit mucky, but the setting is lovely and it makes a nice dip.
worth the bike ride--it's peaceful, and there were some animals which made taking pictures more interesting.
Whether by bike, scooter or car, this is a lovely area with nice views of the North Lighthouse. Great hiking across the road.
I recall hearing this pond is a fresh water pond but I do recall many times as a kid during storms seeing the ocean flow over the road into the pond. The seagull rookery can be load at times especially during breading and feeding. We liked how peaceful it was hearing the ocean crashing behind us while watching the calm of the pond in front of us. We also walked out to the North Lighthouse.
