Seen for several miles away, similar to the Washington Monument, in DC. It is about 2/3 of the DC look alike, and a must see in Western KY. With Abe Lincoln & Jeff Davis both born in KY, you find this "U.S. National Registry of Historic Places," it's monument trip to the top, the museum, & the park a relaxing stop. The the beautiful fields, and the scenes of "horse & buggies, permeate the countryside, with a large number of Mennonites & Amish living in the area. You'll enjoy a stop by, or rest & absorb the history.
The monument amazed my 8 year old. It's 351 feet high, and you can go almost to the top in the original elevator. The views from the windows above are beautiful. Inside the elevator there are also windows so you can see out into the inside of the monument. The museum is very small, living room sized. It mainly consists of things to read. There are a few objects to look at. Informative, but not overly exciting. The store inside is also small; you can purchase sweets and drinks and some misc items such as books and costumes. The ladies who were working were very nice and provided us with extra educational materials. The grounds are beautiful. There is a small playground behind the monument and many picnic tables if you want to pack a lunch.
While visiting children in the Hopkinsville, KY area we decided to get take in some history. There is a small park there for children to play. The height of the monument is impressive. The store was small but had some good literature available along with candy sticks for the little ones.We bought the tour to take the elevator to the top of the monument for a scenic view of the countryside. It was pretty cool going up in the original elevator built around the early 1920's. The guide was informative to tell us how the monument transferred hands between Jefferson Davis and the church. The view was spectacular. It was less than an hour visit.
