The Historic Museum of Wayne Co. is a must see while vacationing in the Wayne Co. area. There are free tours on a regular basis and the personnel are very well informed on the history of our county. Many artifacts from the past are on exhibit, they can even be seen from outside the facility just looking thru the windows. While on tour ask to see the entrance to the caves which lie under Monticello. There is one located downtstairs under the museum. See you in Monticello.

If you have any connection to Monticello/Wayne county Kentucky then there is something here for you. This place is a jewel. Filled with the history of Wayne County and the historians who work there love nothing better than to show you around the museum. I do not think there is another museum of this quality for 100 miles.
Just opening, it was a great step back into the past, A lot of interesting history and the owner is well informed, at this time she has hand dipped ice cream, bologna sandwiches, some locally home made canned products, beautiful antiques for sale. she intends to expand her inventory, can't wait to go back next year to see what she has done.
This is a wonderful museum of history of Wayne County, KY and area, including a complete one room school house! There are many books for sale at the museum that you may not be able to purchase anywhere else. Also, next door is the Elizabeth Furr Duncan Genealogy Library for those interested in history of a more personal nature. Both are staffed with friendly folks who are willing to help you find local lodging or recommend a good place to eat in addition to guiding you though history.

This is one of the best small museums in Kentucky, and the best part it is free. The museum just opened the second and third floors with each hotel room featuring a phase of historical Wayne County. For example, one room is an exact duplication of an original hotel room, another shows all the old grist mills, another the old sawmills, etc. While in downtown Monticello, be sure to see the town square and the town spring, just a block away.
They have some great history of Wayne County. The volunteer guides are very informative and can answer just about any questions you might have. There is also a cave in the building.
