One of Bigfork's treasures is the Wild Mile trail along the Swan River. The River itself is awesome with some of the best scenery in Montana. The trail is high above the river, although there are two or three places where foot paths lead down to the river for fishing or just viewing. Don't miss it.
This is a sweet 2 mile out and back nature trail that follows the Swan River right from the town of Big Fork to a dam which then creates the Swan Lake. The rapids at the beginning of the easy flat walk make a lovely sound and there are several places to stop and gaze out at the river. the path is well traveled but not oppressively so. Most of the walkers seemed to be locals out with their dogs and friends
We put in our kayaks past Ferndale and paddled/floated down the river to the bridge before Bigfork, It's the only bridge and has a boat launch to take out your boats. The float took about 3 hours. The putin was muddy but well worth the effort. You need to have a shuttle between 2 vehicles. Lots of wildlife and a very peaceful float.
Rent a SUP or a kayak for a beautiful paddle on the Swan River. The scenery is phenomenal and it's an easy breezy paddle. The light current pretty much guides you down the river so it is not too strenuous. Gorgeous. Go in the afternoon when you can get a good tan!
As it flows into Flathead Lake it has a little current. There are nicer views as you head north on it but a fun place to kayak
Perhaps the most beautiful river I have ever fished on. Lots of excellent guides to help you get the most of the river. Plenty of places to put in and pull up to relax. Mac Pederson is the guide I have used and the word on the river is they don't come any better than him. All I know is when I fish with him, I catch fish!!!!!!
The Swan River is so peaceful. We stayed in a VRBO cabin near where the Swan meets Flathead Lake by Big Fork, MT. It was beautiful and close to town and the lake. I can't wait to go back next summer.
We took a 4 hour kayak trip down the Swan with one of the local kayak rental companies. The distance and scenery were great. If the weather is nice on your trip to the Flathead Valley, try a kayak or stand up paddleboard on the Swan.
Good fishing in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains and close to Glacier National Park and many other attractions!
Beautiful river, great for tubing or kayaking. Many put in and take out spots.
Fishing, canoeing, kayaking. Pretty river, lots of animal life, ospreys grabbing fish out of the water, families of deer wandering through the yard. Cold water, gotta get used to that. :)
