If you're not into kayaking or rafting, this is the way to spend some time ON the water. A tram (albeit a short one) takes you down to the river below. This is not a long pointed speedboat, but rather a rectangular shaped boat filled with seats, low enough to the water where you can reach the river from your seat. The boat takes off from a long pier filled on both sides with interesting aquatic plant life and LOTS dragonflies and other interesting insects. First the boat passes under the low railroad track bridge towards the dam, then back under again for a ride on the river and then up to the Gorge Bridge. The views along the way are OK, the banks strewn with small shacks, most of them falling apart, but some still occupied. The views of the bridge are great, the ride is relatively smooth, except when the driver (a character unto himself) opens up the throttle and the boat takes off. The breeze was very welcome on the hot August day I was there. It's a great was to spend a few hours, get out onto the water and get yet another view of the infamous New River Gorge Bridge.
We stopped at Hawk's Nest Park to take the aerial tram to the gorge and saw that there was also a jet boat tour, so decide to take it. The jet boat is covered and one doesn't get wet in it, but it's a fun ride to see the gorge from a different perspective. The boat captain, Pete, is a character and does a good job of entertaining the group all of the way along. He provides a unique history of the area. I was impressed at the end of the tour when he was asking if anyone needed additional information about what to do and where to eat. His recommendations for restaurants were great. At the check in booth, Sue has menus and directions for many of the restaurants in the area. We got more information from them than we did at the other places we stopped.
We decided to try out New River Jet Boats because it seemed like a fun way to see the New River Bridge. You take a tram down to the dock which is a very short trip down the hill. The boats aren't exactly jet boats, pretty old and not very fast at all. The trip only lasts about a half hour which for $25 seemed too short. The view is beautiful but I feel that there are plenty of places to see the bridge for free.
Made Hawk's Nest our last stop for our self-made "southern wv loop" VIPP tour and it was a BLAST! We stopped at the lodge and checked out the area. Beautiful layout. Took the aerial tram to the bottom of the hillside (which reminded me of the Lowly Worm from the "Busy World of Richard Scarry"). The highlight of our trip - rode the jetboat, "Ms. M. Rocks", with Captain Rick and LOVED every single minute of it! Because we went the first Saturday in May, it was still the off season - but! the weather was perfect and the captain, me, my significant other, and a young local man had the boat to ourselves. The Captain was very knowledgeable of the area and is quite the comedian. The trip lasted 35 minutes and we saw the New River Gorge Bridge from the river - up. Perfecto!
Went for a ride on the river with New River Jet Boats located at Hawks Nest State Park in Ansted, WV. It was a little pricey but what isn't these days. The view of the New River Gorge Bridge was amazing and the ride through the gorge to get to the bridge was interesting. We saw an eagle and a deer along the way. Our guide told a few corny jokes but he was very friendly. An overall enjoyable experience!
Fast-paced tour of the New River Gorge, including an amazing look at the 2nd highest bridge in the world.
Like many tourist trap type activities this is over priced. For the money, I recommend a raft trip or take the drive for free under and around the bridge. Its okay for something to do.
I gave a review for tram and jet boat rides under Hawks Nest State park. The ticket is expensive but it is ok once in a life time to see and take pictures of the bridge from below. The visitors area for the park was good and big.
We really enjoyed the jet boats! The captain is really funny and short trip up the river to view the bridge is relaxing.
Something fun to do on a beautiful river, Its simply a lot of fun.
We really liked being on the river in a motorized vehicle- there was just a taste of bumpy whitewater at the point nearest the bridge- and all us girls in the group agreed that we now did not need to ever paddle a raft. A very relaxing & low key experience, great scenery.
Very fun ride. Nice view of the New River Gorge Arch Span Bridge.
We did not know exactly what to expect but as you reach the New River Canyon, the thing to do is take the tram down to the river basin and enjoy a jet boat trip up and down the river. Throughout our encounters at this destination, the people were friendly, knowledgeable and sincere in showing us the site. I will admit the quality of the facilities may not be the ritz but the absolute scenic views and solice this destination provided far out weighed any misgivings. The jet boat itself was well maintained and expertly driven through minor white water. The tour lasted about 45 minutes on the water and included a lot of local information as well as the origins of the New River Bridge. I would not repeat the journey but would highly recommend it if you happen to travel anywhere near here.
It was a fun little ride up the river. Getting a shot of the bridge down below is awesome. Neat things along the river. The host is a really funny and experienced guy. If in the area worth the stop.. Just wish it was a little longer or cheaper..
