My wife and I were absolutely amazed!!! I don't know where to begin. From a man's point of view: I recommend you take the guided "Wild Tour". This is a four hour guided tour off the "trail". Our tour guide, Kyle, was outstanding. Made the entire tour feel as if you were being guided by a friend. As a previous reviewer stated, ensure you take your bath room break prior to entering the cave. No bathrooms in the cave and it is four hours before you see another bathroom. Clothing in the cave: Nice pair of boots, ankle high Gortex will help keep the feet dry. Jeans or cargo pants are fine. A T-Shirt with a long sleeve shirt over the top was fine. From a woman's point of view: Women tend to be a little colder however, you have the opportunity to drop off the warmer layer along the trail and collect it on the way back. Bring a comfortable change of clothing. Also, they provide knee pads, which will save your life out there. Wear pants that are lose enough to pull knee pads on under the pant leg. All individuals that worked at the Lost World Caverns were extremely nice. To include the three dogs that are extremely friendly. Don't let the gravel road and limited signs scare you away....you are heading in the right direction.
This is the second year my son (14 years old) and I did this tour. Again, we were very impressed with the entire experience. Let me start by saying that everyone associated with Lost World was extremely friendly. Our tour guide, Kyle, was fabulous. He and my son got along extremely well and that made the tour all the better. My son and I were the only ones on this particular tour (New Year's Day) and that allowed us to skip some things that we weren't interested in doing. This year, as last year, I panicked trying to get through the "birth canal," but again, my guide was very calm and got me through it. I still find it funny that the entrance to the massive underground cavern system is obtained by going through a screen door. We were served a picnic lunch afterwards (very good) that was included with the price of the cave tour. The owner also made coffee for me (that I requested) and delivered it to me in a thermos. We happily shared our lunch with the two sweet resident dogs, Shadow and Cocoa. This is such a unique experience. It is perfect for those in reasonable good shape, who aren't afraid of getting dirty or claustrophobic. My son and I will be back.
I can't say enough about this attraction. My husband and I went on a spur of the moment trip and decided to stop at the caverns on our way. We drove in a gravel road and weren't sure what we were going to find but we're absolutely amazed by these caves. It is a self guided tour so we took our time and enjoyed every minute. I highly recommend you check this out!!
This cavern was very nice. The grandkids just loved it. You got to go threw it at your own pace and by yourself. It was very clean and very friendly people.
The morning after our arrival, we decided to take on this adventure. My husband loves this kind of discovery...but I am always extremely trepiditious of being underground. I felt like we were in the movie Journey To The Center of The Earth. In the beginning you walk down these cement ramps into all sorts of steps and climbs. The area is gorgeous and the formations of stalactites and stalagmites are overwhelming. It was a beautiful and exhilarating experience.
Great fun. Very nice and friendly staff. We enjoyed wondering about taking pictures. We wanted to buy bat boy t shirts but had to get a hat instead.
If you are adventurous and want to try something different take the wild cave tour. It is truly a "Wild" experience. You will leave very tired but with a new appreciation for the world around us. Kyle our guide was a lot of fun and really got the kids involved. We went through some amazingly tight spots and emerged covered in clay. This is not for the faint of heart. You will do a lot of rock scrambling and belly crawling. The hot lunch afterwards was delicious and the showers were a necessity. The gift shop is very reasonably priced and the variety of fossils for sale was really neat. It is an experience you won't soon forget!
nice visit. very cool gift shop and the caverns were great. well worth the admission cost. I hope to go back and do the 4 hour explorer tour.
We did an unexpected stop here on a road trip into Virginia. We were looking for something to get us out of the car for a while. We had 2 adults and 2 girls 18 and 10 all of us enjoyed it. It's not very large, but well lit. It's a self-guided tour, they do provide you with a numbered sheet detailing some of the various sites in the caves. My 10 year old loved reading aloud the details to us. There are a lot of steps that may inhibit some but we were fine. We were lucky enough to have the cavern to ourselves the majority of the time which made it really nice. If there were very many people in there it might become congested as we like to take our time and see everything while others always seem to want to hurry through. The young lady at the counter was extremely patient in answering some questions my daughter had and I really appreciated the time she took with her. If we had more time I would've like to done the 4 hour tour, but as it was, it was a good experience.
I was really skeptical as to if the cavern would be well maintained since it is self guided. I was super impressed with how well the cave is maintained. One of my new favorite commercial caves. The staff are very friendly. We were given a flashlight and a cave info sheet to refer to. My 4 yr old was even given her own little flashlight to hold. That was such a nice little gesture and made my daughter's day.
Clean, well lit, good family place. You can go through at your own pace. Have to keep typing because reviews must be at least 50 characters and I am very concise.
We were just passing through the area and saw the TripAdvisor reviews and decided to stop and were not disappointed. We didn't have kids with us but the were several in the cave with parents and they really seemed to enjoy the tour. There are lots of steps. The fact it is self guided was no problem and we still got alot out of the visit.
Takes a little time to find, but worth it. Self-guided, well lit, with railing, making it perfect for families with children. Nice formations, salamanders and cave crickets, and interesting history. Reasonably priced gift shop with a wide selection, friendly staff, and even a small fossil museum. Even a shady picnic area, and a short trail up to the original cave opening. The nicest "tourist" cave we've visited.
We were in the area for a family vacation staying at a nearby resort to white water raft. We had an off day and decided to check out the caves and it ended up being the highlight of our trip to West Virginia! We took the guided tour that lasted ~4 hours. It was an incredible experience, I would highly recommend taking the tour as opposed to the general admission option, it was way cooler! The guide was knowledgeable and kept everyone safe and all the staff were really nice! The caves were beautiful and it was a really cool experience climbing through some of the really tight passageways was really fun.The value was really good, $70 got us a 4 hour guided tour. They also supplied knee pads to keep us comfortable and all other required supplies as well as a snack and water at the half way point and a full lunch afterwards. They have nice showers to clean up afterwards as well.Of note, there are about 5 slightly more technical offshoots throughout the afternoon. If you are a larger individual, you may not fit through a few of them comfortably. You will still be able to stay with the group as these offshoots end up looping back around or there are larger 'alternate' routes through. You probably only 'miss' about 30 minutes. I am 5'11 and 190 pounds and got through everything very comfortably. Also, just be careful not to over hydrate that morning, there are no bathrooms in the cave!Overall, very fun experience, I would highly recommend it!
I have led many off trail caving tours and this was a great one. Lots of caving, small passages, limestone geology with flooding, and physical demands. The guide and cave staff were excellent. Hands down. I recommend this caving trip to everyone who likes to get off the show cave route.
