That type of bridge is unique and not found everywhere. Our bridge is a lot longer but is basically the same and it ws just neat to see the comparisions of the two bridges
We travel by the bridge regularly on I-70. After reading about it in the AARP magazine, we decided to stop and walk it one beautiful summer afternoon. It was well worth the time. I have a little trouble with heights and the walkway is a metal grate, so you can see the river below you. That took a little adjustment on my part, but worth the effort. The day we were there, a stern-wheeled river boat was pulling away from the shore after visiting a jazz festival at Wheeling. What a special treat.Be sure to take the time to read the signs that give the amazing history of this pre-Civil War suspension bridge.
First time I have seen or drove on a Suspension Bridge. It was quite interesting to experience this first-hand. I wish the weather was nicer so we could have walked over it.
We loved seeing this bridge; it's a beautiful landmark. We enjoyed going to the nearby summer festivals or just walking along the river path and up to the bridge. My seven year old thought it was great to walk over the river on the bridge. It was a little nerve-racking to me because there was a lot of traffic when we walked over. We got some really great pictures and thought it was worth the trip.
Easy access to Wheeling Downs. Was able to get around the city without any problems. Was able to get to the casino without any problems and was greeted as we entered the facility.
If you are a bridge fan, this is one of the oldest, longest suspension bridges in the country. Wiki it and you will be impressed. Good views of the river if you walk it. You can see through the grids and if you walk or run the grid floor "disappears." This route to the Island is easy from town. The island has some neat old homes, although the glory is a little faded. The bridge will take you to the Island Casino and dog track. It is also on the town corner where the newly restored Capitol Theater is located.
On Rt 40 this is a must either ride/drive across or walk across the bridge. I believe this is the or one of the oldest suspension bridges. Very cool to see and the design of it.
Very Interesting to see one of the first Suspension Bridges Built and to drive across it and see the Architecture in Wheeling is even more Fascinating.
A must do if you are in the Wheeling area. Drive or walk (don't look down!)You are able to get a nice view of the river.
We travelled across the bridge on our hotel shuttle. The driver was kind enough to give us a brief history lesson as we crossed.
the thing is amazing, a feat in its time, we walked over it and it sways like the golden gate bridge
My brother, a civil engineer, asked to see the bridge when he visited me. Living here, I had grown accustomed to seeing this landmark bridge, or not seeing it, the way you get used to not seeing the wallpaper. But when I took him to see it, he opened my eyes to it's beauty and it's history. We parked downtown and walked across the bridge, and that's the best way to really see it.
The suspension bridge to Wheeling Island is gorgeous and has great history - a must see on your trip!
This historic bridge along the National Road is perfect for photographing or just admiring from many different angles.
I believe it holds the record for being the oldest suspension bridge in continuous use in the world.
