This is one of the best state museums ever! And it is all free! It truly tells the great history of the state of WV. Everything in the museum is so real from the early settlers to present day. Not only a great educational tool for kids but great for adults to travel down memory lane.
This was a very up to date museum. Great exhibits and very educational about the state of West Virginia. You toured at your own pace which I always prefer. When you finish the museum you need to visit the gift shop, it has some beautiful things related to WV.
Furst if all it's free admission. It's been remodeled. The state has done this right by me lol. Haven't been since may 14 but wanted to write. I have memories of this as a child with school trips. I've always enjoyed history! I can't forget where I come from!
A very in depth history lesson on the State of West Virginia!! My husband and I enjoyed the museum very much!!
I've lived here all of my life and just visited this past year. If you want some great WV history, interesting and well-presented, downstairs at the Cultural Center is the place!
It is a great museum with a lot of history! Every West Virginian should go sometime! One of the nicest museums I have been in!
We love taking our visiting family to the Museum. This is part of our family history. Movies and displays provide education and fun, all ages will enjoy it.
This is a must see if you are traveling in WV and enjoying learning about the area. Very well laid out museum and lots of great info.
We spent two nice hours in the museum . Its really well done and well maintained! Congratulations! You can learn the culture and how the state grow along the various events.. I liked the small movies and the narration along the way..And.. Its FREE! I do recommend. Being from Brasil and living in Boston was a great experience to learn West Virginia!
We stopped in today with my six and two year old. They had a scavenger hunt that my older son enjoyed and my daughter liked the fish along with the soda fountain. The amount of stuff was the right amount for an hour visit, with older kids this could be 1.5 hours. We stopped by the Capitol building after and took some pictures. Warning they're serious about parking, ended up with a five dollar ticket.
I decided to visit the State Museum since I was already touring the State Capitol building. The two buildings are located next to each other and share the same parking lot.I allocated an hour to view the museum. I was pleasantly surprised by the museum and discovered that an hour wasn't quite enough! The museum is laid out as a walk through West Virginia history. You walk a path that takes you from prehistoric times in the state to modern times. There are several audio clips and videos which make the experience more lively.Amazingly, the museum is free of charge. Parking is available in the nearby Visitors parking lot--which has metered spaces. The meters accept only coins (no credit cards). It was 25 cents for 30 minutes. And, the meters will accept up to four hours at a time.
The museum is set up in a way that would keep the whole family's interest. In the basement of the cultural center, its a winding hallway made to look like a coal mine with a vast array of historical displays from WV vastly overlooked history. Parking is metered.
We actually went to the museum when we had family visiting out of town. We are new to Charleston WV so we really did not know what was around. After getting a visitors guide book we decided to go to the museum. First of all, parking is metered, so have plenty of change with you. It is hard to judge how much to put in the meters, as each person will spend different amounts of times in the museum. We were in there just over 2 hours and we really could have been there longer. There are 3 floors to this building, the museum is on the lower level. To be honest I am not sure what are on the other two floors as we did not make it past the museum. You could be at the museum hours if you like to stop and read everything in every section. It really is an interesting day out and you learn all about WV from the very early days. This is a place I will take family and friends when they visit. The Capitol building is right next door to the Culture Centre, this is a beautiful building which you can go inside and look around. The Governers Mansion is also close by. These two places we will be visiting soon.
And part of the Capitol Complex, this free museum is a must see if you are in the area. The cultural center upstairs has changing art exhibits in addition to several permanent installations, while the museum changes less frequently. We discovered Mountain Stage by accident here many years ago.
Very open and friendly - surprisingly so. The grounds are very pretty and the governor's mansion is right next door.
