nice little museum, lots of local and regional history, the folks conducting the tours were very knowledgeable, and informed. well worth going to, a good side detour, or road trip if you are nearby.
Move on! Nothing to see here... literally! You can't pay me enough to make up for the time I lost. Suggestion on improving this venue: bulldoze it and pave it over. A parking lot would be more interesting.
First, let me say that I am originally from Leesville, La but have currently being living in Maryland for over 14 years. As I get older, I have developed a fondness of my hometown. While visiting this past June (19-25), during our family reunion, our family planned a day in downtown Leesville to visit the Museum of West Louisiana. Although the tour is self-guided, the friendly lady that works there was pretty helpful along the way. I think she was excited to see a group of over 15 people at one time. Not to mention, admission is free.I highly recommend anyone passing thru and even those currently residing near by to visit the Museum for a snippet of West Louisiana and it rich culture. Born and raised an Louisianan!!!
The Museum of West Louisiana is a stroll away from downtown Leesville along the railroad tracks. Admission is free and the attendant there competently and cheerfully answers all questions. For instance, I asked why Leesville has such a high visability of law enforcement patrol cars. She told me that Leesville is the county seat and therefore both city police and the Sheriff's department are based there. When I asked about what kind of crime they have, she told me that quite a bit of marijuana is grown on the Texas border. But that there are no street crime or home invasion problems. When I asked about the adjacent train station, she told me that passenger service ended in 1968.
