The Malcolm Preserve proper is a small area with wheelchair-accessible pathways around a loop of meadow along Stearns Street. It is a good spot for birdwatching and contemplation, as well as a large view of the sky. Bluebird nesting boxes have occupants, and the old-field, pine and oak habitat support a variety of wildlife. Handicapped parking is in a separate place at the western edge of the property on Stearns Street, and regular parking is accessible through the Malcolm Meadows housing driveway near the bend in Stearns Street. For those inclined for a larger adventure, a hike down the historic Two Rod Road (now simply a wide, rather rough trail), which departs from the regular parking area in Malcolm Meadows and heads south, leads into Harvard University's extensive preserve known as Estabrook Woods. It includes a network of trails over varied terrain with upland and swamps, some with beaver activity. It is a popular area with mountain bikers, cross-country skiers, horseback riders as well as walkers, with and without dogs. The Carlisle Trails Committee publishes a guide to the area in Carlisle, which extends from Bedford Road to the Concord line. Two Rod Road continues to Punkatasset Hill on Monument Street in Concord and trails extend over to Estabrook Roads in both Concord and Carlisle. Best to consult maps or take your GPS, unless you enjoy getting a bit lost in suburban forests!

The Malcolm Preserve is basically a parking lot with a trail that connects with the significantly bigger Estabrook Woods. The Estabrook Woods are beautiful with incredible foliage and streams. It is easy to get lost. The trails near Malcolm Preserve are especially confusing. I would recommend getting a map and parking at the Estabrook Road entrance in Concord. This portion is much more navigable for the novice and just as pretty.
